In 1969 the Horace Silver Quintet with the Brecker brothers and Billy Cobham were part of a package with the Muddy Waters Blues Band and a gospel group (Stars of Faith?) which I saw at the Batley (near Leeds) Variety Club, of all places. Couldn't get enough of the Silver band, so followed them to London and saw them at Scott's a couple of days later. Sat right up front for one of the most memorable jazz sessions I've been at. Horace and and Billy really had somethin' goin'! All very different from the studio atmosphere of Blue Note Records. Must have been a great experience for sure...... Damn - Batley Variety Club. To think that I was less than 10 miles away at the time - and way too young to get in.

Maybe Dave Douglas would feature in your 'sideman' category. I didn't know that he'd worked with Horace until this week.

Just sad that I never got to see/hear Horace's quintet live. They used to appear regularly over hear at Ronnie Scott's club (at least until the 1980s) but I was never in town to catch them. I think Horace must have really scaled back his touring in later years as well.

What sad news to start the day on. Horace has been a massive influence on my listening. RIP. Tuned in to that Memorial Broadcast right now..

Dug out my old UK LP last night and played it for the first time in at least 20 years. The LP sound is much better than I thought, no complaints there. Lots of good things about this LP - agree that Wess is outstanding (that alto break in 'You're Blase' - amazing) and the rhythm team of George Cables/Rufus Reed/Victor Lewis is very tight and tasteful. A very good record. Nice insert liner notes by Ira Gitler too. Still awaiting that too !

Interesting. I always thought that Germany had a more 'open' attitude to jazz (was always amazed at the amount of challenging jazz and not just Kenny G/Boney James etc. being broadcast on FM back in the 1980s at a time in the UK when it was once or twice a week) but I guess that things must have deteriorated. Shame..

Bought it when it first came out and liked it from the off. The recording always sounded to me a bit 'flat' but as mentioned, Slide Hampton's charts are very interesting and he gets the band to sound much bigger than it actually is (one of his trademarks, I guess, from the days of that early 60s band). Great chart of 'The Moontrane'.

....Ah well, it was a good match! They played as well as I've seen them for quite some time but - alas - the finishing was not up to par and the defence was very suspect at times. If they progress beyond this group it will be a miracle. The coach seemed to get into the spirit of things.
