I had forgotten about these dates. I think I may have the individual CDs. Do the individual discs issued under Nocturne Records "Jazz In Hollywood" Series cover everything in the box set? The individual titles were:
Virgil Gonsalves Sextet / Steve White Quartet-Quintet
Herbie Harper
Bud Shank Quintet / Lou Levy Trio
Harry Babasin Quintet / Bob Enevoldsen Quintet
Steve White Quartet
*Edit: It appears there is a CD by Jimmy Rowles that is missing
The Steve White Quartet that came out as a Limited OJC is not in the Nocturne Box either.
Yep, that's a common issue with these pressings, always thought it was top-end roll off. Always seems to be quite a lot of static on them too (US pressings of this series).
Saw the Bath Fest performance of that one (late May/early June). Even got to have a chat with Mr Hill after the show as he was having a beer and he signed some CDs and the Mosaic booklet for me (in really scrappy hand-writing !). A very nice person and really glad I got to meet him.
NorthSea sounds like totally the wrong venue for Andrew Hill's music - although when I saw him in Bath back in 2003/4-ish with a big band it sounded a bit under-rehearsed with with badly compromised stage sound. The solo piano and Archie Shepp duo performances at the QEH London a few years earlier were better/more coherent (especially the solo set).
Sounds great and will be tempted to go and see them when they tour the UK. You can never accuse Metheny of short-changing the audience with the generous duration of his concerts.
Max Roach 'Deeds Not Words' on Riverside has some esssential Booker Little.
Picked up the 'Time' Quartet album when it came out on vinyl as 'The Legendary Quartet Album' on the Island label. Came out on this label at the same time that they were issuing Bob Marley and the Wailers !
Still a favourite album. I can hear a lot of Kenny Wheeler's style in this album and Kenny has acknowledged the influence I believe.
This sort of reminds me of European vinyl box sets (pressed in Germany) of Bill Evans and T. Monk that I bought at a Munich store of Zweitausendeins around 1983. They were solely European Riverside compilations - obviously special licensing issues applied. Damn low price as well !
Nice ! Mine's only a 47W63rd..
Nice ! Mine's only an RVG CD
And I've the Vol 2 on Lexington too!!!
Now, now......
Picked this up in a used bin earlier this year too - with Tal's signature on the back of it !
