  1. I've never seen him live but have really enjoyed hearing him in a myriad of settings for many years (first thing I heard him on was Quincy Jones' 'Smackwater Jack' I think, when it first came out). That's a lot of years - here's wishing him an enjoyable and peaceful rest.
  2. Sad news - I like that recording he did for Impulse with Teddy Edwards and Milt Jackson. RIP. I've got the feeling it was mentioned in a previous thread but also can't find it.

  7. I would have thought that Johnny Trunk at Trunk Records would have already re-issued these if the masters were available. An interesting candidate for re-issue though.... I think I read somewhere that the master of the first one was lost (and it never really got a full issue anyway). Definitely worth a reissue, with some fine Evan Parker on it.

  13. Enjoying the disks so far Stefan. So far I've drawn a complete blank but one of those harp tracks sounds like Caspar Reardon on acid !
  14. I've seen numerous mention that the Tempo label master tapes were destroyed (during the 1970s? - I think Simon Spillett has posted elsewhere about this) so however they have re-created these LPs they did a stunningly good job.
  15. Even the Japanese reissue`s of these Tempo`s ( mastered from an old UK original album) are beautiful. I've A/B'd one of the Jazz Couriers Sawanos against a Tempo original. The Tempo original has the bigger sound/more bloom/more presence but the Sawano compared pretty well. Agree that they are excellent - and pretty amazing considering they are needle drops. The flipback sleeves are also a work of art !
  16. Interesting - didn't realise that it had a US issue on Riverside ! Sonics on the Tempo are (predictably) lovely.
  17. Thanks for the prompt. It's the only way I get to watch it in High Def in any case ! High Def? Is that something that has to be routed via Japan? For some strange reason my region is only due to get HD roll-out for BBC4 on Freeview later this year, yet I can get HD on the I-Player !
