  10. Why the heck has no-one yet given Simon a publishing deal for his Tubbs book? Especially so as he's such a good writer.
  11. I owned a Cortina Mk III for quite a few years - typical 1970s machine. Got to be very fond of it (with its vinyl roof) but I had to finally part with it when the whole gear level came away from the gear box housing in my hand. A good car for DIY - you could always find the bits you needed in breakers yards and it was truly fully maintainable by the owner, given a reasonable garage, tools and the Haynes manual.

  18. I'm amazed how good the build quality of the case is, just like the real thing. I'll likely end up selling my duplicate CD sets at some stage - just too bad that you can't fit the Plugged Nickel box in the spare space in the case. Jazzbo - I saw a copy of the set with everything sans CD boxes on ebay the other day. Might be just the deal for yourself, if it is still around.
  19. Anyone else spring for this box/tour-de-force? Mine arrived today - finally treated myself to it, took less than a week to get here from the US and I'm very impressed by the overall quality. Turns out this one is no. 446 - a bargain, at £200 inc. postage and packing via UPS to the UK. I'm going to give the mouthpiece a tootle it looks very usable.
  20. Damn - Just went in to get the Elmo Hope Riker's Island and the sale had already finished.
  21. Yeah, it's really good - a very professional piece of work. A book that I must give a re-read !

  23. The Derek Ansell Jackie McLean bio will probably bedisappointing I think to a fair number on this board - although it is very readable and does though provide quite a good overview of the recordings right through his career, quoting from sleeve notes and obscure Jazz Monthly/Jazz Journal articles on occasion and with some inputs from Jackie's wife Dollie. You could say I guess that it is a bit of a 'British fan' perspective. I would have liked a bit more detail and less quotes from sleeve liners, a bit less repetition in places - also more coverage of McLean's touring/gig reports and key sideman dates. Also, things like the circumstances of 'Monuments' are hardly given a mention. As an overview though its OK and what does come across loud and clear is Jackie's devotion to his family, devotion to life-long learning and his great professionalism.
