  1. Based on Heining's article in the last episode of Jazzwise (which was almost a supplement to the book and a very interesting read - all about the 'Little Theatre Club', Evan Parker/John Stevens and AMM/Eddie Prevost) the book looks like a 'must have'. I'm holding off until Amazon gets the price back down.
  2. The revamping over the past couple of decades of GCSE's and A-Levels with emphasis on modular stages/rote learning 'by numbers' hasn't exactly helped, I feel. Nor has the increased emphasis within businesses on use of standard frameworks and processes, to be applied on all jobs in a cookie-cutter fashion. Helps in terms of predictability/repeatability and quality assurance (plus ticks in the auditor boxes) but certainly doesn't help to promote innovation.
  3. Really? We were clear by Monday morning. Last Friday was by far the worst of it. Just minor flurries since then. Of course, compared to some of the stuff I used to encounter in Canada it doesn't even register.
  4. Stan Getz 'New Sounds In Modern Music' (Savoy 10")
  5. Get it while you can. Advice taken. I've just snagged a copy and also gone for the Cohn/Newman/Green, Bechet and Pendulum Selects whilst they are still around.
  6. Quite a character - RIP. His legacy over here will probably be dominated by his 'Calm Down Dear' TV commercials..
  7. Not forgetting Wayland's Smithy ! In the 'old' days you could sneak over the fence and walk to the top of Silbury Hill but I'm not sure that's possible now, unfortunately.
  8. Quite a context-shift between those two !
  9. It's worth the trip John (regardless of my comment) - I have been many times. Not too far from Swindon and about as different from Swindon as you can imagine, in a very good way I might add. Bev is right, in that you can stroll amongst the stones pretty well freely, across the top of the circular enbankment. A good 'Sunday' place to visit and may I suggest a leisurely stroll on the Ridgeway and viewing of the Uffington White Horse to top and tail it.. The chalk downland near Mere/Kingston Deverill in SW Wiltshire is excellent too - much more open/spartan but very atmospheric. You can combine that one with a trip to Stourhead.
  10. Over the years, it has got much more touristy. They out to do a re-run of that spoof UFO (balloon UAV) that had New-Age punters in the pub garden rining the BBC in panic on their mobiles.
  11. For as long as I can remember there have always been 'aspirations' for jazz in this country. Remember the Jazz Centre Society and the HQ debacle? Unfortunately, amongst the public at large we're just a bunch of toe-tapping beardies who get thrown the occasional bone.
  12. Yet more proof that I was born in the wrong decade.. The ropiest shop deck I ever saw was the one upstairs at Mole in their 'final' location, not long before they closed. That one had a 5p piece taped on the headshell.

  15. Congrats ! A great LP set.
  16. 'Mame' Mother Theresa Mother Shipden
  17. Yes, I am sure you're correct. Show's how memorable Dobell's must have been. Yes, the famous bag with the chequered mole on it. And the t-shirt !
