The 'Pendulum' is great. Some strong music in that set and the sound isn't bad either. You'll find yourself replaying it quite a bit I think.

I really like her recordings with Sonny Simmons and would like to hear the later stuff too. Truly sorry to hear this - RIP.

By pure chance, some years ago I got to see the Blue Coronet owner, Mr Habersham-Bey, given an official presentation by the Ciry prior to a Bertha Hope gig held at a hotel in Brooklyn. It was fascinating to hear just how many great artists had played at that place and to get to see the owner of the place. Interesting to read the full details of that Miles Davis shooting incident. From recollection, Bertha's group that day had Walter Booker on bass and Leroy Williams on drums along with Roni Ben-Hur on guitar.

Sad to report that trumpeter Derek Watkins has just passed away. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/music-news/9949927/James-Bond-trumpet-player-Derek-Watkins-dies.html A great, powerful lead player and a stalwart of the Dankworth, Kenny Wheeler and Clarke/Boland Big Band, among many others. Last time I saw him was with the Wheeler Big Band a couple of years ago. RIP.

I think that session was recorded at the old Chappell Music on New Bond Street, London. Small studio - on the upper floor of a larger music/music instrument store. When I popped in years ago and saw how inocuous it was it left me gob-smacked that the great Monk had actually recorded there.

Called in at 'Ray's Jazz' at Foyles bookstore yesterday and noticed they had some pretty nifty 'Ray's Jazz' cofee mugs and totes for sale. A stack of Mosaics in there too..

Looks like we are returning to the 'bad old days' when I only ever bought CDs from the US on visits over there. The 'Jazz Messengers' site and our endangered domestic CD outlets will get more of my trade. In any case I tend to buy most of my CDs second-hand from domestic specialists anyway. Quite.
