Oh dear ! I've been itching to read this book but the last thing I want is an academic text. I'll be watching any more progress reports on the read with interest before I pull the trigger at Amazon.

Picked up the book in London today. I'm a sucker for this band and will happily read anything ever written about it. Some good weekend reading coming up, hopefully.

Health & Safety?

I managed to thumb through a copy at 'Ray's' today but at £45 it was a bit out of my league (bought the Mwandishi book instead). It looks fabulous though - and for $50 I would say definitely worth it. Lots of good work obviously gone into this 'labour of love'.

I'm hovering by the post-box for these 3 Selects like a puppy waiting for the master's paper !

The price is definitely right with this '78 rpm' lark !

Lots of the selections in the book were really problematic in terms of being able to get hold of them in the UK in 1975 - original Blue Notes never issued and rarely seen by mere mortals over here; JR Monterose on Jaro, Carl Perkins on Dootone etc. In some cases UK alternate pressings on the likes of Vocalion and Transatlantic were listed - which by then were pretty well long-since deleted in any case. Over the years it has been a real pleasure to pick up and check out this material as it re-emerged, especially in the CD era. There was an up-issue some years ago to 'Essential Jazz Records - Vol 2 with slight changes to the list of authors - Stuart Nicholson and Eric Thacker added (Charles Fox had since sadly passed away) and the original content extended with selections of post-75 material. I hear what Chuck is saying re: cost of the book. I saved up months of paper-round money at the time to afford it !

He used to regularly review jazz LPs for the 'Gramophone' as well, along with Charles Fox. Both of these guys could always be relied on for accurate and insightful reviews. Great book indeed. Bought that one when it first came out (quite hard to get hold of in regular bookshops, needed a special order) and it has been a key resouce ever since !

Indeed - superb performance on 'The Inflated Tear'. Always enjoyed his playing, RIP.

Can't find the damn LP to confirm either way and I'm far too lazy today to search high and low in any case !

I have a UK Vogue 12" pressing of 'Grand Encounter'. Same cover as per the original Pacific Jazz. Alun Morgan's sleeve notes on the back, I think.

Mine's a Japanese pressing too. Cost about £5!

Thanks for that. Ordered there and got 28 points on my Nectar Card too! Nice to know I can order Miles Davis CDs alongside the shallots and bleach. Maybe they will stock it in the racks next to the fruit and veg? Tempted by this one - and nice to get some Nectar points thrown in too.

In that case, I'm glad I have a UK Emarcy vinyl of 'In The Land Of Hi-Fi'.

Wasn't it out on that 'Complete Emarcy' Cannonball twofer put out on Verve as a 2CD?

The one in Toronto Ikea was better dressed..
