  2. Cos the kids could dance to it? There was quite a big scene around the 100 Club and various places in Soho. A case of London trends spreading into the boondocks?
  3. He was a very good entertainer, for sure. Certainly on the entertainment 'A' list in the UK for many years. Very sorry to see him leave us - RIP. Just Acker left of the old triumvirate of Kenny Baker, Acker Bilk and Humphrey Lyttleton.

  5. Looks like Northway Books are really on a roll of late. After I've finished the Jackie McLean bio they put out, I'll be tempted with this one. Oh dear..

  7. That was exactly my impression the first time I saw this band live. Those albums (and 'Moto Grosso Feio') came very much to mind.
  8. Just spotted this on the BBC I-Player. Review of Miles' 'electric' years by Red Dwarf actor and DJ Craig Charles. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01r2q32
  9. Sold mine to Mole Jazz for £2 decades ago. Been kicking myself ever since ! Lived there once.
  10. Speedy recovery and good health to Mr Rollins !
  11. Lots of Andorran stuff on there. Interestingly, many of these titles are also being marked down significantly on the Jazz Messengers site too.

  13. UK RCA pressing - bought by me back in '75. 'Up From The Skies' is easily the best arrangement on here. Fortunately I got to see Gil play it about 5-6 years later.
  14. Have a great one !

  16. Indeed - looks depressing. Wouldn't mind seeing Vasen on the Monday - you don't often get Scandinavian folkies over here but not worth the trip. Has Nod Knowles gone? I know he went to a more overall position. He seemed to be the enthusiast for the unusual in my years there. Bring back the alphorns! Yes - I think his association with the Festival ended a couple of years ago. That was probably the straw that broke the camel's back as far as jazz was concerned, plus no doubt BANES (Bath and North East Somerset Council) is strapped for cash. I suspect much of the driving force and organisational commitment went after the nice lady who was his assistant on the jazz side of things passed away (tragically young as well) a year or two before that. Maybe this new Festival to be held in Bristol can pick things up? Alternatively, we could do a "Charles Mingus Newport Rebels" and start one up.. http://www.bathpavilion.org/hire-bath-pavilion

  18. Very disappointing lineup for Bath this year. Norma Winstone's Trio at the Guildhall should be brilliant (and a fitting location for this group) but otherwise there's nothing to grab me. No 'jazz weekend' again either - RIP the Pavilion.

  20. There was a time when CDs in Canada were much cheaper than the UK and pretty well anywhere else but the US. What happened over there?
