  1. Some Sunday afternoon Zap-Pow action with Sun Ra and 'The Sensational Guitars of Dan & Dale' aka Blues Project Universe Records reissue of the Tifton.
  2. One of my Tubby Hayes box sets has a Tubby session recorded for that slot on the 'Light Programme'. Continuity announcer sounding like an Eton posh-boy.
  3. Hey MG - That's far too much like Jazz. get back to the Eric Coates, BBC "Light Programme" tea-time classics etc.
  4. The first person who comes to mind is Andrew Hill. Must have been absolute murder being in one of his rhythmn sections !
  5. John Laurie Hugh Laurie Bertie Wooster
  6. Canada was the one place I have caught the Stones live - but it was in Alberta and not Toronto. I needed binoculars in what was an Olympic-size stadium to catch the prancing Mick doing his gyrations on the stage ! It was over $50 - which I thought at the time was daylight robbery but based on their gig prices this year in London (£90 and up.... ) was a bargain. Charlie Parker/Bebop fanatic, of course. I think I paid about the same in an A&B Sound on one of their (late-lamented) 20%-off days ! Saw a copy over here recently (2nd hand) in excellent nick for £150.
  7. Good to see that Toronto is still coming up with the jazz goodies. Not sure if this still applies but a lot of NYC bands used to drop by there as a 'shake out' prior to touring North America so it was always a good place to check things out. Remember in the space of a few months getting to see Elvin Jones, Mongo Santamaria, Phil Woods, Pharoah Sanders and Louis Hayes touring bands this way - plus a first outing by Miles of his touring unit at the Massey Hall ! Great deal on the Plugged Nickel - that one is priceless.
  8. May I offer up this delectable morsel to put you all to sleep this Sunday..
  9. Tony Hart Pat Keysell Sylvester McCoy
  10. Is jazz dead? Can't believe we are discussing this stuff !
  11. Walked past the theatre that one was recorded in a short while back (Cochrane Theatre in Bloomsbury). Doesn't look to have changed that much from the photo shown in that Camden CD.
  12. Billie Piper Piper at the Gates of Dawn Rufus Harley
  13. Disc 1 - Praying with Eric. Ditto !
  14. Wow - got hold of my box today after paying the Danegeld (pre-ordered and the box-numbering is already up to 950-something ). They even managed to damage the shipping box ! Have just listened to the first Town Hall CD so far but it is fantastic - much better fidelity than I remember. The 'So Long Eric' and 'Praying With Eric' are outstanding performances. As is Jaki Byard's intro piano feature. Nice booklet and essays too. Sue Mingus even gives a mention to us 'non-Facebook emailers' !
  15. Just noticed that they have free shipping within the EU too over a certain amount. Looks like I'll be joining you ! These guys have definitely noticed and addressed a gap in the market.
  16. Doris Karloff John Sergeant Victoria Pendleton
  17. This bit of Sun Ra does it for me:
  18. Even though I have a vinyl of this one I'll probably also go for the CD. Only 'Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe' to go - interestingly it is those various rare UK Verves of the period that are taking an eternity to be reissued on CD ('Phil Seamen - Now!', Colin Bates 'Brew' come to mind as well as 'Dejeuner'). I wonder what the problem is with those?
  19. Big GRunt Vivian Stanshall The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band
  20. Biffo The Bear Lord Snooty Gnasher
  21. The Silly Sisters The Middletons Mr Middle Majority
  22. A fine obituary in today's Guardian newspaper - http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/nov/29/pete-la-roca
  23. Grover Mitchell Billy Mitchell Mich Mitchell
  24. Happy Birthday !
  25. That's very interesting to hear, Clunky. They've obviously tightened up big time on us poor 'modest-package' shipment types - easy cash-cow target. I hear that they are not giving charities a discount this Xmas either. With there was an economy option to these suckers.. If it was just the (lowish) £4 import tax that I had to cough-up it would be OK. £8 for giving them the privilege of picking up the box and giving it a blessing is ludicrous though ! That sounds good to me. Thanks for the advisory ! They already have the Mingus set in stock, for anyone interested.
