  1. Barbara Thompson 'Live' (MCA 2LP)
  2. I suspect that the Disconforme was a needle drop. Vocalion have re-issued so much of the Argo catalogue that it is suprising they have not latched on to this one. A good companion piece to Michael Garrick's 'The Heart Is A Lotus'.
  3. 'Mel Lewis & Friends' (A&M Horizon) Just re-assembled and switched on my hi-fi so a good one to kick off with. Improved sound !
  4. Ridiculous - I've seen a copy recently for about £100 - in fact two of them ! That one is priced for idiot posh-boys with a bonus burning a hole in their DJ
  5. Bradford St George's Hall?
  6. One of the reasons why Japanese vinyl reissues were so great. Never had this problem with them. Stuff issued by Muse, Inner City, Cadet on the other hand...
  7. More great Miles. this one is so different to the others from this period. Yes, I remember buying this when it first came out and there were only a few friends who could stay in the same room when I played it! I prefer the mix on the lps. 'Rated X'? I used to have to put the headphones on when that one came on. Isn't that on bakelite? If so I would prefer to avoid (combined with the fact that 99.9% of previous owners aged 5-10 will have already trashed them ) - the only issue on the reissue is that it is in mono. I remember seeing that LP in Woolworths (I think) back in the 1960s when I was shopping with mother for a bat-cape !
  8. Ginger Rogers 'Ginger Rodent' Alexander Bullingdon Posh Boys
  9. Very sad news. I was never a massive fan but what a great ambassador for the US. And a great person too, by all accounts, starting from his WWII exploits. RIP Mr Brubeck.
  10. Neat ! Diverted along the way by years working with Stevie Wonder (he was on TV on a Wonder documentary (BBC4?) not too long back talking about his old custom recording facility in NYC).
  11. Dickie Davis Betty Davis Gary Gilmour
  12. EmCee Five 'BEBOP 61' (Birdland records)
  13. Eic Kloss 'To Hear is To See' (Prestige blue label)
  14. Keith Jarrett Elvin Jones Slam Stewart
  15. Yusef Lateef 'Eastern Sounds' (UK Fontana, stereo)
  16. Fats Willie The Lion Jaki Byard
  17. Some Sunday afternoon Zap-Pow action with Sun Ra and 'The Sensational Guitars of Dan & Dale' aka Blues Project Universe Records reissue of the Tifton.
  18. One of my Tubby Hayes box sets has a Tubby session recorded for that slot on the 'Light Programme'. Continuity announcer sounding like an Eton posh-boy.
  19. Hey MG - That's far too much like Jazz. get back to the Eric Coates, BBC "Light Programme" tea-time classics etc.
  20. The first person who comes to mind is Andrew Hill. Must have been absolute murder being in one of his rhythmn sections !
  21. John Laurie Hugh Laurie Bertie Wooster
  22. Canada was the one place I have caught the Stones live - but it was in Alberta and not Toronto. I needed binoculars in what was an Olympic-size stadium to catch the prancing Mick doing his gyrations on the stage ! It was over $50 - which I thought at the time was daylight robbery but based on their gig prices this year in London (£90 and up.... ) was a bargain. Charlie Parker/Bebop fanatic, of course. I think I paid about the same in an A&B Sound on one of their (late-lamented) 20%-off days ! Saw a copy over here recently (2nd hand) in excellent nick for £150.
  23. Good to see that Toronto is still coming up with the jazz goodies. Not sure if this still applies but a lot of NYC bands used to drop by there as a 'shake out' prior to touring North America so it was always a good place to check things out. Remember in the space of a few months getting to see Elvin Jones, Mongo Santamaria, Phil Woods, Pharoah Sanders and Louis Hayes touring bands this way - plus a first outing by Miles of his touring unit at the Massey Hall ! Great deal on the Plugged Nickel - that one is priceless.
  24. May I offer up this delectable morsel to put you all to sleep this Sunday..
  25. Tony Hart Pat Keysell Sylvester McCoy
