  5. Upwards of £50 in good nick for the UK versions and probably more for the Dutch Fontanas. I've got several of them - I think I picked the Dollar Brand one up for about £7 ! Isn't the Marion Brown cover art taken from a Brownie photo? (I'm sure I remember him mentioning it). any preference for monos vs stereos in this series ( where they exist in both) ? I think I prefer the stereos for all of the Fontana pressings (example - some of the Tubby Hayes LPs, I think I have both mono and stereo for '100% Proof' and the stereo wins hands down). With respect to the Marte Rolling sleeve LPs I think only the Dollar Brand of the ones I have is in mono. The rest (Cursons, Mohawk, Russell etc.) are in stereo.
  6. That's what I thought. There's mention of renovation. Perhaps it's in a rather old fashioned condition. Only one bedroom with en suite... Wish I had six hundred grand MG About the price of a 1-bed London slavebox (sans en-suite).

  9. Very reasonable price for such a fine house. I remember reading about it in that Derek Ansell bio and by all accounts Griff loved it there. I guess there are purchase taxes to add on - 10/15%?
  10. That sounds ominous - it's marked up in the mailshot in red as well !

That is true. Most of the Miles Davis CBS LPs I have from back then were Italian imports - not cheap either ! Other than that it was mainly 2LP reissue compilations in the UK. As for Coltrane - other than the mid-70s Impulse reissue series here in the UK with 'Africa Brass' and 'Coltrane', the Impulses were tricky to get and most of my LPs ('Sun Ship' for example) were acquired at Zweitausendeins vinyl store in Munich !

  14. Totally agree. Listening to the Coltrane Quartet Implulse box end-to-end recently I was left marvelling at just how much his playing permeated everything. His bass solos (which always seem to have quite a ruminative quality) are always a standout for me too.

And not to forget how damned expensive, relatively speaking - some of those reissue LPs were back 25-30 or so years ago. The CD era has definitely been a big plus in that respect. When it all started to kick in for me was around the time that Fantasy brought out the Rollins, Mingus, Monk, Dolphy and Joe Henderson boxes. Only too bad that I didn't latch on to Mosaic until later on.

  17. Happy Birthday Brownie ! And pretty chilly it is out there too !
  18. It was certainly worth the expedition and the 2nd mortgage for the fuel to get there ! I did get student discount for the admission though. I'm hoping that they do one of their Xmas gigs this year - either the Brass Band or the Big Band - in the Exeter/Teignmouth area. So far, now word on the Westbrook site.

  20. Caught the gig at Barnstaple last night after a crazy drive over the top of Exmoor. Alan Wakeman was in on alto (and played superbly) but otherwise the lineup seems to be pretty well as per the Drewe Arms gig mentioned above. Lou Gare back in the lineup as well and contributed some really excellent clarinet solos. A varied, well-paced couple of sets at the old Queen's Theatre as part of the Barnstaple 'Fringe' - lots of Ellingtonia, a bit of Weill/Brecht to feature Kate's vocals and (pleasingly) a good scattering of Westbrook originals including an extended 'On Duke's Birthday', a Chris McGregor tribute and an extended variation on 'Johnny Come Lately'. Good stuff and - one has to say - how refreshing it is to hear a 'real' big band.

  24. Not suprised to see Chris Spedding on that list. Harry Beckett was a bit more of a suprise though !
