Hilarious ! I had an incident with some similarities to this but it was at the much later 'Harold Moore's' version of Mole on a Saturday afternoon not too long before it shut up shop (I was 'fiddling at waist height' in the Collector Vinyl racks ). A bunch of loud and 'liquid refreshed' vintage Soho-type characters came in to the store, pretty well took over the place and provided a commentary on life, the Universe and everything. Very entertaining it was - and knowledgable. A year or so later what looked like the guy who was the main font of knowledge popped up on a BBC4 documentary about old jazz clubs and the debauchery that went on in them. From the BBC film, I think this guy turned out to be the head bouncer for one of those places ('The Flamingo'?) Incidentally, as an aside - that photo I refer to shows an 'Art Ensemble' poster attached to one of the racks. I wonder if it is one of Chuck's?

Apart from their Annual Xmas/New Year Sale.. I remember quite a bit of jostling to get through the front door on the first day of that and a few stiff upper lips quivering (amazing how there were always so many bearded portly guys of a certain age amongst the clientele). A bit like the "Harrods Sale" of jazz !

Britain's Jerry Sandusky? The Independent: Jimmy Savile scandal Although he was always sort of odd/eccentric - and there had always been the odd rumour flying around - those of us of a certain age are still pretty damned speechless with what is coming out on this story. Massive.

In my case it was 1989 - and the catalyst was emigration to North America and cheaper CD prices in the shops. My first player was a Nackamichi. Some of the early Blue Note titles then for sale were (to me) astonishing - titles such as Wayne Shorter 'Night Dreamer', Andrew Hill 'Black Fire' and Hank Mobley 'The Turnaround', which I don't think I'd even seen before on any form of vinyl. They could also be picked up for around $10-11. The main problem was getting them out of the damn longbox that they came with !

What live music are you going to see tonight?
sidewinder replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Lucky man ! They were playing locally to me last week but unfortunately I missed it. Isn't that Swananage Tent No. 2? -
Wasn't 2005 when the 'Harold Moore's Records' upstairs version of it on Marlborough St closed down? Still - even that seems an eternity now. I'm starting to get my head around the perspective of that photo. Trouble is, I used to spend most time at the far end of that photo, where the Deletions rack was I think (being a pauper student and it being the Winter Of Discontent and all that..)

Strange thing is - I don't remember the shop internals looking like the photo on the top LHS. That must have been after they 'switched' the entrance of the original place to the Pentonville Road end. Much more familiar with the original 70s arrangement - plus the relocated shop across the road.

Up for this thread. There's a short article on Mole Jazz in this month's 'Jazzwise'.

Bennie Maupin's notes to this CD mention being taught by Murphy and his gratitude to him. There's also a nice solo piano tribute dedication - -
Obscure Albums You'd Give Your Eye Teeth to Hear

Bought it at a record collectors' fair a dozen years ago for about £5 (=c.$8). Like new. There are lots of the 70s Authentic/Dooto reissues around - I see them quite often and they sound pretty good. The original deep groove version is more elusive and way more $ though. -

The first two are on the OOP Mosaic set and I have the Ruth Brown on a UK United Artists LP. The 'Presenting' is probably my favourite Jones/Lewis album - studio recorded with pretty well what was the original rehearsal lineup and a stunning mix of arrangements (most by Thad but there is a very fine Bob Brookmeyer 'Balanced Scales = Justice'). The Ruth Brown is more of a feature for Ruth but is definitely worth a listen. Mosaic's fine remastering got rid of the prominent reverb that was on the original United Artists LPs and I wonder if BGO will do the same.

Yes, that is very fair comment - Although the Dankworth bands always had a very strong jazz contingent in the lineup and there was always some jazz content, the 'showbusiness' element was always very prominent. Dankworth's albums also featured some of his catchy TV themes and - case in point - the 'Theme From Tomorrow's World' , very familiar to just about everyone over here of a certain age . To my ears 'What The Dickens' also has very much a 50s-West End, sort of 'Victorian music hall' feel sort of in keeping with the Dickens theme. Brits can probably appreciate it but I guess it doesn't travel well .

Help in Choosing a Mosaic Set
sidewinder replied to WarpedOrb's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I picked up 7 of them on one occasion (6 vinyl, one CD) - at between £25 and £30 each (a copy of the Quebec/Hardee was in that stash too). A one-off, never to be repeated. What made it even more amazing was that it was in London ! -
Help in Choosing a Mosaic Set

I'd go for both - but at a push I would say that the Art Hodes would be the one to go for, if you just take the one.
