  1. Bud Shank CD5 - 'New Groove' session.
  2. That would be %££££ Londoners. Ignore them..
  3. It came as part of ther deal with the frothing-mouth cattle.
  4. Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet 'Dusk Fire' (UK Columbia mono) Great way to start a day !
  5. Second the comments about 'Passing Ships'. A bit rough in spots, and some of the arrangements sound like sketches that are still being worked out - but some of the music is of great beauty. Rooster is right about the big sound that Hill got out of this ensemble. Sort of reminds me a bit of Hank Mobley's 'A Slice of the Top' in the way that the tuba is used to fill out the ensemble. Not often either you hear a cor anglais on mid-sized groups of this type. Lenny White in this group is also a revelation to me.
  6. It's always an eye-opener to see how cheap the good bottled beer is in Germany. No poxy little bottles either - its 0.5L and up. And not having it taxed to death as a 'sin tax' ( ) helps too ! (Gordon Brown take note).
  7. Any fans here of the DEC games that you could boot up on the good ol' PDP11s and VAXs? 'Adventure' was a classic. You interacted with it on the teletype. "Welcome To Collosal Cave. You are carrying a lamp and an axe. The lamp is on. An evil troll is standing behind you etc etc"
  8. No. All you have left is an autobahn without (in many areas) speed limits.....and now the evil EU bureaucrats in Brussels are conspiring to take that away! Sorry, but you got that all wrong: THAT's what I have when things get too bleak ... P.S.: I'm the ONLY German without a driver's license, a car and a mobile phone. And at 0.5 Euro a litre bought in bulk at your local Lidl store compared with the £1.99 per bottle of the amber nectar we have to pay. If we're lucky, that is.. Welcome back !
  9. Very strange TV broadcast that one (wasn't it a pseudo-religious series of which this episode was some sort of exped. into the 'dark side') but invaluable footage. Shame that the band is not filmed more clearly and that the announcer guy keeps butting in with pronouncements from the audience. Still, it is truly historical footage !
  10. Was watching that Robert Herridge film of Gil conducting his orchestra last night. Don't think it's him - the guy looks sort of similar but the way he conducts is totally different to Gil (who seems to be very precise/economical with his conducting movements). The high-pitchings of the reeds in the arrangement are sort of Gil-ish though.
  11. Earl Anderza 'Outa Sight' (Toshiba)
  12. Pepper Adams 'Critics Choice' (Toshiba)
  13. That was from one of the 'Frankly Jazz' half-hour shows recorded in LA. Jack Nimitz on baritone. Some idiot seems to have labelled Gerald on trumpet as Freddie Hill on this copy.
  14. Michael Garrick Sextet 'Promises' (Argo stereo)
  15. Blossom Dearie 'That's The Way I Want To Be' (Fontana). With Ian Carr, Harold McNair etc. 'Gil Evans and Ten' (Esquire)
  16. The material with the string group arranged by Kermit Moore was only previously available on the 'Cosmos' Blue Note 2LP set from the late 70s I believe.
  17. If my memory is right, Haden was featured artist during that excellent 1989 Montreal Festival over a whole variety of features. Didn't catch any of those performances unfortunately but did get to see a great gig by Marc Johnson's 'Bass Desires' group at that Fest.
  18. Pharoah Sanders 'Tauhid' (Impulse white label stereo - promo copy)
  19. Cal Tjader Quartet 'Saturday Night/Sunday Night at the Blackhawk' (Verve stereo) Fabulous Wally Heider location recording !
  20. Have had this one for 6 months or so. It's quite a good general overview and especially good if you haven't got too much Milesian literature. No great revelations in it though.
