  1. "Ice Master winder Flava" for me..
  2. Those mid-50s LPs are infinite life ! Now spinning 'Tubby Hayes and the Jazz Couriers' (Tempo TAP15)
  3. Hm, I didn't know there had been a TOCJ of that one. Must see if I can still get it. I've only got the LP. MG I've never much got into 'Blue John'. I have it on the 'domestic' CD with that weird, home-made looking cover art. Must give it another spin for reconsideration.
  4. Don't tell me about it ! I passed on most of them in the deletions racks at about £2 each. Only picked up the CBBB 'Live at Ronnie Scotts' though. 'Classic' MPS artwork with primed sticks of gelignite, high power neon signs etc. on the covers as I recall.
  5. Almost unthinkable ! Thanks for the clarification.
  6. Happy Birthday, Free for All !
  7. A lot of the credit for that must go to 'catalysts' like Mike Westbrook and John Stevens - and sympathetic venues of the time such as Ronnie's 'Old Place' in Gerrard St and the Little Theatre Club. Plus the incubator role of the 50s/60s art schools !
  8. Sister Sledge Scissor Sisters Sister Rosetta Tharpe
  9. Is that pundit guy Don Cherry still in action these days? (not he with the Mosaic but the mouthy one with the stiff collars and gangster suits).
  10. My sentiments entirely ! As you say, a really good vibe on all of George's albums (at least the ones I have heard). The 'Musart' is an interesting one. Covers everything from MOR vocals to afro-groove to neo-Trane free form.
  11. Yep, I have the book 'Fire In His Soul' by Alan Robertson. It is essential reading. According to the book, Mingus paid a visit to Harriott as he was literally on his death bed in a Southampton hospital. Apparently he turned up during the night out of visiting hours and had to be turned away. Left a message for Harriott though. It's also on record that Mingus had huge respect for Harry Beckett, with whom he'd recorded a soundtrack album back in the early 1960s. Harry usually throws in some Mingus material in his live shows to this day.
  12. Nothing that I've heard of.
  13. Joe Harriott was doing his 'free form' experiments in the UK around 1960/61, recording 'Free Form' and 'Abstract' in the group with Shake Keane, Pat Smythe, Colleridge Goode and Bobby Orr/Phil Seamen but sadly he was 10+ years ahead of his time and promptly got ignored over here.

    Bud Freeman

Who's on that one? I heard Bud in London in the early '70s at a Sunday jazz brunch at some hotel, with saxophonist Johnny Barnes and trombonist Roy Williams (both very good players) alongside Bud in the front line. It was fine mainstream Swing -- less programmed that the later World's Greatest Jazz Band things. Slight correction on the title I gave Larry - it's 'Bud Freeman Esq.' I think - with Dick Katz, Spike Heatley and Tony Crombie. Recorded in the mid-60s I think. I believe that Bud was resident for a period here in the late 70s and became very much an 'honourary Brit'. He was frequently doing gigs around London (especially the Bulls Head, Barnes). I'm just sorry I never caught any of them. Remember seeing Roy Williams some years ago too. Superb technically and one of the best of the British mainstream players.
  15. Right now :- Bud Shank Pacific Jazz CD1 Earlier today - Randy Weston Select CD1

    Bud Freeman

Anyone heard that 'Bud Freeman in London' LP on Fontana where he is decked out in a business suit, bowler hat and brollie? I've always wondered what that one was like.
  17. Must have been Ronnie Scotts. A BBC 'Jazz 625' broadcast was also made on this tour.
  18. Not to forget this gem either:
  19. I've got that MCA twofer set too, Shrdlu. Will try to find it later.
  20. Rick Stein Gordon Ramsay Sweary Mary
  21. Yep, the RCA Neon label was short-lived but the quality of recordings and cover artwork was first rate. Funky decals on the LPs too ! Didn't last - the accountants no doubt caught up with them.
  22. You are absolutely right Yves concerning the sound of those original Contemporary stereos - they are great ! I've got the 4 Blackhawk LPs on that black label stereo imprint plus the 2LP set of the Manne-Hole recordings. The latter is a good one to get after the Blackhawks.
  23. I've got some of these too. One of the Pat Martinos ('Clear Evidence' I think) and a Jaki Byard 'Live At Lennies'. Both on SABA. Great pressing quality, with original US artwork. The German Blue Note Libertys were great too (see previous threads..)
  24. Big John Patton 'Along Came John' (BN NY USA stereo) Jimmy Smith 'Groovin' At Small's Paradise Vols 1 and 2' (Both BN 47W6rd DG mono no 'Inc')
