  1. Yes Hans, I remembered your story and thought of it when the needle jump happened on this track. Great Don Ellis number - it got me to play the album through back to front again, something I haven't done for a while. Thanks !
  2. ...thanks to chewy, that damned Phil Collins 'Easy Lover' Aaaaaaaaagh
  3. I'd forgotten how naff those were !
  4. 'Don Ellis at Filmore' (CBS 2LP)). Ring modulators at full bore !
  5. The path to 'Mosaic Ultimate Kenny G.' is getting shorter..
  6. My guess for the 'ETA' is the group on this one: Track 3
  7. Recognised track 11 - yep, Don Ellis. Dug out my vinyl - side 3 track 2 (or CD2 track 2) of this gem - Track 11
  8. Just starting to listen to the disk 1. My guess for the album/lineup on track 4 is this one (guitarist quickly recognisable - I think?): Track 4
  9. Quincy Jones 'Birth Of A Band' (Dutch Fontana stereo). Pretty well the same material as on concert 1 (filmed in Belgium) of the 'Jazz Icons' DVD.
  10. The two late 80s/early 90s Blue Notes ('Eternal Spirit' and 'But Not Farewell') are also really good, if you can find them. Both typically thoughtful and somewhat under-rated recordings (featuring Greg Osby and Bobby Hutcherson).
  11. Great little writeup - its been too long (25 years ) since I was last in Paris (driving into town Mitterand's - or was it Giscard's - limo drove past me, no less). Must make plans too to get over there on the Euro-star ! It would be nice to check out Paris Jazz Corner in person too, instead of just the website. The trouble is, I would probably come out of there totally broke..
  12. Frank Foster Big Band 'Giant Steps' (Nippon Columbia). With Thad & Mel !
  13. Don't shoot your wad.. Pacific Jazz vinyl or BN 'West Coast Classics' CD?
  14. I have that one on a UK Parlophone, somewhere. Now spinning John Surman 'Where Fortune Smiles' (Dawn)
  15. Mine's a Bergenfield deep groove but looks to have a grey label ! Ever seen one of those before? Do you mean this label? Yes, that's it.
  16. No - according to the book 'Cornbread' didn't sell so well. 'Search For The New Land' was number 2.
  17. Just checked the latest (January 2007) brochure and there's a writeup in page 3.
  18. I was interested in the point made in the book that 'Caramba' was the third best selling Lee Morgan Blue Note and even made the R&B charts (high hundreds). Strange that second hand copies of the LP are not so numerous ! For me its one of the best of the later sessions, along with 'Sixth Sense'. Nice mix of groove and adventurous material. I'd tend to agree with the comments about 'Charosma' though. A bit of a 'rote' session.
  19. Major find - looks like the largest neolithic settlement ever found in the UK. Very innocuous spot, if it is next to the 'Woodhenge'. These days the whole of Salisbuty Plain is wind-swept and barren but 5,000 years ago with the milder climate it must have been an Eden.
  20. I have a Japanese CBS-Sony LP by this big band called 'Giant Steps' from around 1976. Very nice - I'll dig it out later on.
  21. Mine's a Bergenfield deep groove but looks to have a grey label ! Ever seen one of those before?
  22. That's exactly the question that cropped up in my mind from what I read so far. If it was a case of complete loss of teeth then it's incredible that Morgan could recover such technique. Especially in those days before the likes of implants were available.
  23. Great choices. Oh dear - I can feel the onset of 'Condon Mob' trigger finger..
  24. Looks like Tony Williams 'Million Dollar Legs' will be a shoe-in for this label. Not to mention the Chick Corea 'Smurfs' LP. However if it gives them the working capital to keep the 'real' Mosaic boxes and Selects rolling off the press ad infinitum then I am for it. Especially with all of the current problems at EMI.
  25. Nope - New Zealand lamb leftovers !
