  1. Rent parties, how common were these, and did they help? I ask, because tonight at Smalls in NYC there will be one held for Harry Whitaker. Site
  2. One of my favorite stories came from the late Carl Bernhard. Carl lived Oslo. He took a ferry one day to Copenhagen and knocked on the door to Dexter's apartment. Dexter opened the door and gestured with his index finger to come in. They walked into a room where Dexter had a bar. Dexter opened a new bottle of Beefeaters gin and they started to drink. It wasn't till two thirds of the bottle was finished, when Dexter finally spoke. "How you doing Carl?" I love this story. Time to pull out the movie Round Midnight. Do you recall what year this was?
  3. Happy Brithday Dex. Spinning some Dexter music right.
  4. Does anyone remember a few years back there was a thread on coming up with your blues musician name? I did some searching but couldn't find it.

  7. hope it is great day.
  8. Happy birthday Michael. Stay warm.
  9. What caught my attention is with all those tenor players, there is this one trombone player. What made them through in Benny Powell? I should ask Powell the next time I see him at a gig. Maybe he can recall how he got on the date.
  10. In a recent interview which you might find on youtube, Sonny said he may go back to a trio group for his next studio album. If that is true, it would be very exciting.
  11. You think they would have someone worth listen to. What a lineup.
  12. I didn't write a follow up to this story. I went back on Friday and Saturday of that week. On Friday between sets, Lee was in the back with Lorraine and they both were laughing. This leads me to believe Lee has a hard shell and just below off what Lorraine said as "It's Lorraine, and she is just being herself." But still, she was kind of rude.
  13. Randy is worth seeing as a trio, quartet, quintet or whatever format he is playing in.
  14. Just about everyone has read "Catcher in the Rye." I didn't know he had not published in so long.
  15. Centaur Pirithous Twelve Olympians
  16. HBJ, are you being quite witty with a good pun (in which case I congratulate you!), or do you not realize that the line went "The names have been changed to protect the innocent." Mark VII! Dum de dum dum:) I meant it the way I wrote it.
  17. The Simpsons O.J. Ojibwe
  18. Langston Hughes Maya Angelou Alice Walker
  19. With that said, playing jazz is not like popular music where a fix set of tunes will add up to X amount of minutes. With jazz, the musicians' solos can make a tune 10 minutes one time and 20 minutes the next time. It is all determined upon the mood at that moment. Playing 55 minutes or 75 minutes is irrelevant in my opinion. Lorraine is just a grumpy person. I've seen it many time when I've gone there. I am going again tonight so let's see she does something new.
  20. Woody Herman Woody Woodpecker Baby Huey
  21. That sucks, regardless of where the radio station is. Jazz always has it a rough time in the states with air time.
  22. You can always change the names to protect the incident and tell it anyway.
