  1. Here are the sets.
  2. Box photo looks fine to me.
  3. Just received my copy from Amazon!!! Thanks to board members (Ron S etc) for the heads up on this deal. :tup At half the price, I could live without the numbering on the booklet. Btw - my box does not have any words printed on the spine.
  4. From an e-mail received a month back, Mosaic still has booklets for all except for the following: #102 Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker #104 Clifford Brown #111 Charles Mingus #116 Bud Powell #126 Johnny Hodges 1951-1955 #127 Cecil Taylor/Buell Neidlinger (one left) #131 Stan Getz/Jimmy Raney #133 Grant Green/Sonny Clark #134 Commodore Volume III #135 Live Count Basie #138 Nat King Cole #139 Otis Span/Lightnin' Hopkins #162 Lee Morgan (xerox copies) The booklets do cost $10 a piece. Btw - does anyone have a spare copy of the George Lewis disc 2 and Serge Chaloff disc 3 to sell?
  5. And their booklets are a great resource in that they actually list the order of the soloist in each song. In some cases, I couldn't for the life of me figure out who is playing, so this helps tremendously.
  6. Recently obtained a partial set, discs 1 and 2 plus the booklet, direct from Mosaic. Can't wait to check them out. Disc 4 of the Mosaic has the exact same tracks as the Blue Serge disc. Also eyeing the Uptown release.
  7. Before getting into jazz big time: Beatles - Revolver, Abbey Road, Rubber Soul Kate Bush - Kick Inside Jazz: Duke Ellington - Small Groups (Columbia) Louis Armstrong - Hot 5 and 7 Bird - Savoy and Dial Studio
  8. The music of James Reese Europe's band might be worth exploring. There are two CD reissues(IAJRC and Mamphis Archives) of recordings made in 1919. Both discs have the exact same songs but in different order and sound quality and, the latter has extensive liner notes. Check out Amazon for more information. I haven't got this music but will definitely be checking it out soon.

Looks like another title has been added to the catalogue. DGF56 - Perry Bradford (I Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle) See here.
  10. Maxed out on 2 already, just for OJCs.
  11. I'm somewhat of a Pink Floyd fan. One of my favourites is Roger Waters doing the primal scream on Careful With That Axe Eugene. Gives me the chills just thinking about it. Green Is The Colour must be one of the most beautiful ballads ever recorded. The Piper At The Gates album is superb from start to finish. I've yet to hear any post Animals (which I found rather long and rambling) albums, maybe someday.
  12. No and Mosaic did not charge a cent for them although I did order a few sets at the same time.
  13. Living in a hot and humid environment, some of my Mosaic booklets and CD liner notes have begun to yellow in patches (looks like some kind of growth/fungus). The CDs are in fine condition but I can't bear to look at the booklets. I've thought of ordering a duplicate set for 1 or 2 favourites such as the Hodges, but so far I've thought better of it. Anyway, Mosaic is sending me replacement booklets for some of these sets (what wonderful service!). Looks like higher electricity bills are in store since I'm gonna use a lot more air-conditioning.
  14. All of the above, except those that don't ship outside the U.S. and, Amazon.com since their prices are way too high.
  15. Not sure if this is of any help. The Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, formed in the 1980s, interprets American music scores written in the late 19th and early 20th century. The music is a combination of ragtime, waltzes, marches etc and has no vocals (at least on the discs I have) - very melodic music, fair bit of syncopation and overall quite enjoyable in reasonable doses. I do not recall any guitar used though. "Black Manhattan", featuring music composed by James Reese Europe, Will Marion Cook and others, seems like a good place to start (I don't have it). See here for more information.

Another new release: Looking forward to this one.
  17. Ditto Ditto to this too
  18. How about Billy Taylor - good/great jazz pianist and underrated?
  19. Her first album, Kick Inside, works best for me mainly for the haunting melodies on certain songs and some lovely ballads sung in a more 'normal' voice. The songs Moving and Strange Phenomena sent chills down my spine when I first heard them. This one's probably not as sophisticated in terms of lyrics or emotional depth compared with Hounds, and there are some fillers, but deserves at least a listen or two. I listened to this album at least 5 times in a row when I first got it. Her third album, Never For Ever is right up there too, some might say even better.
  20. You forgot Sepanyol.
  21. Voting and posting from Malaysia.
  22. Volume 11 is here. Together with a Louis Armstrong live CD, the first of four volumes. More information at the Storyville site. D.E.T.S Vol.11 Louis Armstrong (April 12 release in the U.S? according to Jazzmatazz)
  23. Three tunes stand out for me as I can pick them out quite easily. - Well You Needn't - Brilliant Corners - 'Round Midnight
  24. Candu means opium in several languages. The album should be banned unless it changes that song title. :rsly:
  25. ...and James Reece Europe's military band? Yes!
