  4. I think that Pujols needs the Cardinals more than the Cardinals need him. As Matthew says, the Cardinals can replace him with a very good player for less money/years. What other team will sign him for the money and years he wants? Maybe The Yanks if they didn't already have a first baseman. Then again, perhaps there's a team foolish enough to take the bait.

  7. After reading all of this, I'm glad that I don't care much about Oscar Peterson.
  8. Read it a couple of years ago and enjoyed it. As you say, it is a disturbing book. I'm sure that some of the academic references went by me, but I did enjoy what I was able to pick up on.

    Robert Johnson

I was listening to the Yazoo CD, The Roots of Robert Johnson, the other day, and got to thinking about what might have happened if Robert Johnson had lived and had come to New York to play at John Hammond's From Spirituals to Swing concert. He might have been taken up by Hammond's New York liberal crowd and become a "folk" performer like Leadbelly and Josh White, performing for primarily caucasian audiences. Speculation is easy, but it sometimes provides something to think about.
  10. Woody Allen has his own style. His films engage me and don't insult my sensibilities or my intelligence. That's enough for me. I continue to watch both his older and newer films.

  13. I only know his work from the Atlantic, Verve, and Wave recordings he did with Lee Konitz. He was one of the relatively unsung musicians who played his part in the music. Thanks and R.I.P., Mr. Ferrara.
  14. I bought that one back in 1962 when I was trying to learn about the music. I was attracted by the names. Even then, I was disappointed.

  18. Bobby Bland: "Stormy Monday Blues" from Bobby Bland: The Voice (Ace) I must have heard this tune at least 50 times, but Wayne Bennett's guitar playing never ceases to amaze me - perfection!

  22. Maybe, but I'm still disappointed that since the rumors of a Rivers set started swirling last year and there was the possibility for it coming out at the end of 2010, instead we've seen reissues of Ellington and the MJQ. Not to denigrate those sets, but it just seems to me that the Rivers stuff, because it has been much less available, is far more significant musically and historically. As a huge Mosaic fan I want to see them continue to produce more sets in the mold of Braxton, Threadgill, and Carter/Bradford, among others. To me there's a lot more potential for growth there than there is in going over the more mainstream stuff from the 1950s and 1960s. That said, I'll probably get the MJQ at some point because it is not music that I own (except for maybe one or two albums). But it doesn't generate the same kind of excitement for me as a Rivers set would have. We have to remember that part of running a business - especially on the scale of Mosaic - is making sure that you stay in business.
  23. The Yanks have signed so many guys to minor league contracts that they must figure that one or two of them has to have something left. ??????
  24. Forgot to mention a favorite bit from John McDonough's liner notes: "I tried to get his (Anthony Braxton's) entire discography - an impossible task. (Braxton has put out five albums while you were reading thia.)"
