No shame. . . it's just that one is tricky. . . it doesn't reveal it's charms too easily. And it may be that the charms are for the cognoscenti. . .that is if you know Duke well and if you know Pops well this is a hoot. Full of little moments. To me to hear Pops singing "Azalea" is a delight! But that's because it's just a song I like and I know other versions and Pops sortof does what he does and transforms it so subtly. Things like that make this a really great session for me, but I can imagine that to someone with less familiar ears it may not mean that much.

Nocturne - Jazz in Hollywood
jazzbo replied to Big Beat Steve's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
There is a previous thread or two about this, and I don't remember all the details except that no Vol. 2 is planned. . . that the material that would compose it was not compelling enough and/or the best was released recently elsewhere. -
Snotty opinion seconded. "Mission in the Rain"? I like it. I like "Cats Under the Stars" a LOT too.

What PigPen fans? This is a Vince board. Go on home, your mama's calling you. Okay Mom, I'm coming. I was just hanging out with the Welnick boys. You know they never get into trouble. . . .

Some nice covers for those few Pigpen fans. . . . http://www.wulfware.de/covers/Index3/GD690613.htm http://www.wulfware.de/covers/Index3/GD690614.htm Nice shows too. 6/13 Fresno has some electric piano from Pig! 6/14 is like a triple decker Turn on your Love Light sammich!

I have compared the sound on the Pullen and Gordon Selects to the original cds. . . and actually prefer the original cds. By a hair. Not much difference, the new cds sound "thinner."
-
I used to own that.... wow. . . you should try that one again sometime.

Thanks for the words about my wife and my life this year. . . .It's possible that my wife will be discharged from the hospital TODAY after 37 days in the hospital for a bone marrow transplant. . . we'll have to be here in Houston a few more weeks at least, but I'll be glad to not spend 12 hour days in the hospital with her and to have her more comfortably back at the "studio suite." I've never heard any Grados. People rave about them. . .but people rave about everything. . . there's so much subjective reaction and reporting, and ultimately "one likes what one likes."
-
I haven't heard the new box. I sent a copy to a friend as a gift, and he really likes the sound. . . but he's no audiophile. . .he's a trumpeter.
-
Hey, I just trust my ears. If others trust douchebags or what they perceive as scientific reasoning fine, in audio I trust my own ears. In musical reproduction it's all so subjective. So scoff if you want, but I prefer a laissez faire philosophy and listen for myself. Some people think little jamboxes are all they need. I try to respect that.

I have three of the Philology Tony Scotts and think they're fantastic!

Lon is still about. I've been talking less audio things for two reasons: a) as my system has evolved everything sounds better and I've paid less attention to various remasterings, and I have so much to listen to, and so little discretionary funds, that I'm not upgrading necessarily, though I'm buying all the RVGs I can as I like the series and when I see deals on them I grab those I don't already have. b) I've been spending the last 11 months helping my wife battle her lymphoma which has meant six full months spent in temporary lodgings in another city away from my collection and my stereo and listening to an iBook and Bose powered speakers and headphones (nice Sony for a while, now B&O A8s which I love). . . as a result I appreciate any music I have a chance to listen to and am not focusing on sonic qualities at all. As regards polarity. .. I always pay attention on JAPANESE RVGs to polarity when I'm at home with my stereo. Most sound best when the polarity is reversed on speaker cabling. . . TO ME. As far as recommending good sounding jazz discs. . . I'm so glad I have the "Louis Armstrong Plays W. C. Handy" SACD. I think that is a fantastic sonic presentation of one of my biggest sentimental favorites and I recommend seeking it out if you have an SACD player. I also really like the sound of the last two Miles Davis boxes, the Jack Johnson and the Cellar Door. Excellent cd remastering!

Fork! Ah well. Next time maybe a sixties show.
-
It's all subjective, and if you have the K2s, maybe just sit pretty or try the SACDs. I prefer the SACD that I have of one to all the other versions of that title that I've heard so far, next for me would be the XRCD minilp copy I have, then the K2, don't have an RVG of that particular title. I'm not as fond of the Hoffmans as others are. So. . . if you have discretionary income to sample, sample some, but whichever is "better" no one here can tell you. I agree with Robert h. in this regard.

MANY MANY MORE HAPPY HAPPY ONES!

I didn't want to find that power cords made a difference either, and I found it hard to believe that they would. I in fact dared a friend of mine to show me. I wish I hadn't. I find they do make a difference on the finest of my components. And different power cords . . . made components sound a little differently. I notice the biggest difference with digital equipment such as DACs, cd and dvd players. I'd spend/I do spend the money there first.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
jazzbo replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sonny Stitt Roulette. Got an email that the Andrew Hill new Select and the Slide Hampton single that I ordered will be shipping in about a week. -
LF: older Japanese jazz and rock CDs
jazzbo replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Offering and Looking For...
I've got the two Quebecs. They're worth the search, as are the Hodes, Bechet and others released in that same series. -
It was Ralph, not Vic. Vic was amazing. I bet I have hundreds of sides he was on and he never failed to add real dimension to the piece. Even led his own session or two. He was integral to the development of drum hardware as well. What a guy!
-
I've always liked this one. George does play well!
-
Yes, that's right, I remember that now. . . had seen your AAJ contribution earlier this morning.

Isn't it about to be released in a remake starring Nicholas "Ghost Rider" Cage?

I think the next batch is in February. There is a thread now on AAJ that lists them. . . I assume it's accurate.
