  1. Many more happy ones!
  2. I was that way for about nine years . . . had a small bedroom as my listening room/archive/library. Was great. . . . I think this is better (room is more than three times the size, speakers really breathe, stuff seemingly happens way behind them out in the front yard!) but do miss the intimacy of the other room some.
  3. To paraphrase Dr. Johnson - "A man who is tired of the Jazztet Mosaic is tired of life.." That Capitol Set is a good one. I have it on vinyl so will prise it off the shelf (with fork lift truck) later. Oh I've listened to that music on and off for most of twenty years. . . . I just find the Jazztet material in particular to be a tad too "arranged" for my current tastes. I crave rawer and more visceral stuff I guess. Life's circumstances seem to color my listening habits.
  4. Me, I'm withdrawing from near-field listening. I moved my best system out into the living-room dining room and am enjoying the change. There are advantages to both near-field and non near-field listening. . . . Now I definitely feel less as if I'm "in the music" or on stage, and more as if I'm in the audience. I can dig being in the audience. I'm excited to find how wonderfully my speakers can handle either setup.
  5. I've had the Jazztet set for a while now--one of my favorites. I am, however, still on the fence about the Capitol set--at the moment leaning towards not getting it. I ponied up for the Jazztet. . . even though I had almost all the material. I find myself. . . bored. The music just doesnn't excite me these days. Other days in the future will probably be different. I'm so glad I bought the Capitol set years ago. It's expensive and I would be hard pressed not to go for it, and hard pressed to afford it. I don't want to live without it.
  6. Okay, I'm envious! No great gift like that for me for Xmas! Right now, the new Fats Waller Legacy box. A nice job! Keepnews did good! GREAT sound.

    Al Hibbler

I know for sure he sang it on that record with Roland Kirk. . . . I'm pretty certain he sang it with the Ellington Orchestra as well. Will look for evidence.
  10. That Ellington will be nice to have, I have the lp and the studio performances are great! Now if they would just do "A Drum Is a Woman!"
  11. Lazaro, try holding down the option key as you select the track. . .may cause it to download and not play.
  12. The last splurge I made included BBC recordings from Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green years) and Bowie, the newest Mendes reissues, the "Clapton" deluxe reissue, and the Waller and Weather Report boxsets.
  13. Thanks! Preordered the Pearson and the Silver!
  14. I didn't have any problem. . . .On my iBook. A friend of mine did on his iMac. . . he told me he solved it by holding down the option key as he selected a track and it went from playing to downloading.
  15. And again. . . is it jazz? . . . Monday Michiru, "Routes." I go back and forth about this one whether it's in my very favorite Michirus, but it's fantastic!
  16. Hmmm. . .80 and a half minutes. Seems likely then that they WILL be able to get both Kenny Cox records complete on one Connoisseur!
  17. MANY MORE HAPPY ONES MARTY!
  18. Interpreting Monk is really I think best when it's "personalized" -- for me. To try to play it "Monklike" is in some ways doable as his tunes are so distilled down to pure Monk is some fashion. . . . To take the music and further personalize it for YOURSELF as the player. . . is not as easy I think as one could guess. This is an instance where I think Evans just really put his own soulfulness (which is very different from Monk's) into the playing.
  19. Well, I guess there's different ideas of "Deep." I think he transforms the song into an Evans vehicle, and I find it beautiful, and it has an elegance that I really enjoy.
  20. Hmmm. . . I love some of the Monk versions. . . . My favorite would be "Round Midnight" on the Manne Hole Riverside. Awesome!
  21. It has been on cd. . .from European CBS.
  22. Welcome to the fifties! (I'm ahead a year and a half!)
  23. Cassandra Wilson, "Thunderbird," if you want to call it jazz. This one grew on me and got into my psyche.
