  1. Hey, I take what I can get. . . . My expectations of jazz reissue programs diminish as time goes by. The majors are all about the money. They have bigger needs as bigger beasts and overlook the 1% of buyers that we are. The copyright laws. . . well with floods of classic stuff coming in from Europe, we'll hardly see many of these titles from the majors that hold the best sources. Ah well. Yes, rebuying is silly. I do it for the stuff I really like, like RAM. . . . I have 99% of the Columbia/Sony Duke (gaps filled in nicely by Chronogical Classics and CSB France) so. . . I'll rebuy it when they get around to it. (The 200th birthday? I'm planning on being around, bionic parts and all.)
  2. I actually think they did a great job with the "Round About Midnight" deluxe two cd set and would welcome more classic jazz lps done this way. Specially if yourmusic.com picks them up!
  3. The remaining three RVGS from that last batch are now on yourmusic.com
  4. Yo, Flurin, I don't disagree with ya. . . but the Newport stuff put out by Columbia is just the one (big moment) track. Then again there was that "Newport and Miscellaneous" release that had all the Newport material on it before, likely the source for the tracks in this box set. I've decided to translate "Never on cd before" as usually meaning "we've never put this out before. . . or have we?"
  5. Once upon a time or three!
  6. Someone better get the JIP boxes. They're. . .beautiful.
  7. I'm beginning to know the type of courage he had and some of what he has been through. I salute his strength and his spirit. Sad news, and my best to his family and friends.
  8. Finally you caught up to me! Many many more happy happy returns!
  9. Well, I love Duke Pearson. . . but he's a Junior Duke compared to the Maestro!
  10. Also be on the lookout for some of my favorite broadcasts: Basie Orchestra from the thirties. . . pick any one. . . awesome. Duke from the Panther Room, or the Cotton Club, or. . . Jay McShann Orchestra (with Bird) airchecks Benny Goodman Orchestra (and Trio and Quartet) from the Madhattan Room or elsewhere It's amazing to think you could spin the radio dial and catch these.
  11. Guy, I was just going to add a post to suggest the Due Ellington Treasury Shows! (DETS) Aric, check 'em out! Amazing!
  12. It took you 3 posts to bring this up? Good stuff! (and thanks!) Well, I was scared away from the use of the term "hard bop" really. I mean. . .that's a very narrow definition for SOME people. And not a lot of CBBB material fits that so narrowly.
  13. Not bloody likely!
  14. If there's any Smallville fans here. . . I notice that Target.com has the first three seasons (all three I think are six dvd sets) for 18 dollars each.
  15. YAY! Christmas with the Duke!
  16. Overstock.com had one copy of this earlier for about 51.00 and $1.40 shipping!
  17. Okay. . . how do you feel about the Clarke Boland Big Band? Some of their lps qualify as big band hard bop! (Plus)
  18. Let me mirror all you have to say about the ATBB!
  19. Not exactly what you're asking for throughout, but MAN!
  20. Many more happy ones exneighborhood guy!
  21. It's all going to go GREAT!
  22. Ghost, I'm giving my sister June's Got Rhythm for Christmas. Do you have an opinion of it? Her most respected album seems to be Something Cool which I got years ago and enjoy. But I chose this one because Something Cool has her in front of an orchestra, while Rhythm has her with a small group. All of her Capitol albums - at least up to the early 60s - are really solid; but the BEST ones by far are with Pete Rugolo. Well. . . the Rugolos aren't necessarily my favorites. But I really like "Got Rhythm" . . . swings and is short and sweet and directly to the point.
  23. Three artists that I have listened to a lot this year: B.B. King (as Dan has), Monday Michiru (as Jim has) and the Grateful Dead (largest quantity, thanks to a few downloading sources). Also continued my passion for Duke, Monk and Pops this year.
  24. I'll tell you a cd that really impressed me recently, sonicswise:
