  1. Definitely not! I do really like his remastering work of disc-recorded sessions and his own sessions; guess it's a matter of personal tastes. . . . I'd rather he than McMaster handle his sessions tapes. . . decidedly.
  2. Listened to some Kirk from the complete box set last night, about two hours worth from four of the discs. I just keep realizing what an amazing artist he was! I shouldn't be surprised by now, but he keeps on surprising! Not an easy trick. . . .
  3. Cellar Door Miles Davis was preordered this morning via cduniverse.com
  4. Preordering now possible through cduniverse.com
  5. I think the two Shearing MGM cds are available from the Verve Vault. . . .
  6. Great music! I've had all the music here for a long time. If these were RVGs I'd grab them all. I'll get whatever comes out on yourmusic.com
  7. On cduniverse, Retrievals show up under Challenge Records. . . They are the distributor if not the home label.
  8. I agree with Chuck, from a marketing standpoint this is a natural. . . they might as well get on the RVG reissue wagon as Blue Note and Verve (and even the Monk Family) have used him . . . There must be some money in it for the labels. Concord might as well come out of the ropes with something new and proven. And I happen to be one of those who likes his remastering work a lot. . . . I'd be interested in hearing these. . . I'll probably get a few.

    Howard McGhee

They share the Dial sides. . .but differ otherwise. I'd recommend the Chronogical Classics under Howard's name. Well, I was being serious in a way. . . I think the McGhee stuff is important enough to have it all and the Classics discs are great.
  10. If one opens the first link that EKE posted for Challenge, the Retrieval appears. . . .
  11. In both cases I think you have the case of an out of print Japanese single lp reissue, and an out of print American combination/compilation release. . . .
  12. Phantom Navigator made it to cd in the US. I have it somewhere, can't bring myself to spin it. . . not a favorite.
  13. That's what I thought! Thanks Chuck.
  14. I think Challenge=Retrieval. Challenge is the father company of Retrieval, it was Retrieval I believe that Harold and I meant.
  15. Are you sure that the out of print cd in question is not of recordings originally done on disc? I have this somewhere and think that may well be the case. I've downloaded a half a dozen or more titles from the Vault and they sound fantastic! Most I've gotten are Japanese cds digitized directly. . . . Really great sound!
  16. Problem is that. . . in reality. . . gasoline is firmly a part of American politics. . . national, international, local. . . . Wish it weren't; we'd have seen real innovations long ago!
  17. Do any new jazz items appear this week? I didn't see any. BUT the Rene Olstead album has replaced the Chris Botti album as "Featured Album." What would they think of our musical tastes?
  18. I'd recommend that one too; the sound is better than any other source I've heard the material on. Wnen introducing others to twenties jazz material, the better the sound the easier the task.
  19. Assuming they have corrected the problems with the liner notes since it was introduced years ago ("Chuck Berry" on tenor sax?) I would recommend Columbia's "Love Songs," a very nice collection of material very well remastered. Or one of the current one or two cd compilations from the ten cd "Lady Day" set on Columbia. It's been my experience that starting with "Love Songs" the remastering on the Columbia Holiday material is better than nearly any other labels, significantly better.
  20. Quincy, thanks for the headsup, I missed that this was available and just ordered it. (I have all the others in the series; so far my favorite is the one with Saunders; excellent!)

    Gato Barbieri

    The ESP IS great.
  22. I have the vinylzed "Domination." I dig it. I dig all the Balls of that vintage.
  23. Me too. Couldn't pass these by!

    Gato Barbieri

I'm a fan. I love the Impulses and the RCAs. I like how he fused South American sounds with adventurous jazz textures.
  25. Thanks for the information!
