  1. Well, I really enjoy the first release in the "Pure Jerry" series, releases of live Jerry Garcia Band shows along the lines of "Dick's Picks." (Sort of). It has the dreaded Donna Jean if that is a problem for some. . . not for me. Jerry plays so well and the band is having fun and "groovin'"! There is a second one out: four cd set three cd set I haven't gotten this one yet, I ordered it and the next one and should have them in about 12 days. . . . Not sure what to expect on this one because my knowledge of the 1987 band is slim, but there are two editions really in this volume (a four cd set and a three cd set), and electric and acoustic music is included. Should be good. Anyone already enjoying these and have impressions? Finally, coming December 20 is a third one, with Merl Saunders: How can that be bad?
  2. Dan, those are two good choices, I bet you like those! Me, I was going to ask for a Mosaic set for Xmas, and then Helen asked me "What do you think about getting a lap top, an Apple one, for you sort of for Xmas"? I replied. . . "Not a bad idea. . . "
  3. I'm far away from my copies, but I'm 99% certain they are NOT the same performances, rather different ones with different personnel. . . .
  4. Bought the Jazz in Paris disc "Pardon my English" by the Blue Stars, with three tracks also by Henri Salvador. Yesterday. . . bought TOO MANY Jerry Garcia discs from www.jerrygarcia.com (but at least a few of them are going to be Xmas gifts).
  5. A very very infrequent poster here that I correspond with RAVES about this set. And he KNOWS singers.
  6. I've been listening this morning to several of the latest Connoisseurs. . . . Makes me want RVGs even more!
  7. I still have to get that one but I have all the others! Hope it's a special day!
  8. Welcome Mike! Glad you are posting here!
  9. I'd buy it in a minute too. Damned good guitar on this one too!
  10. Dan, I'm so surprised he didn't tell you! I sometimes have George and Calvin Newborn mixed up in my mind, I find them to have similar styles . . . I dig them both.
  11. Very valid points Stef. I'm trying to correct my wandering eyes!
  12. Yes, I know whay you mean, my system in an early incarnation made over fifty percent of digital sound really bad (analog sounded wonderful). I've tailored with interconnects and cabling and power conditioning and isolation components to have a sound that is more enjoyable for ninety percent of cds I have (and I have about 10,000 so I need to want to listen to them!) It still measures well, and I can't wait to get home to listen every day and live for my weekend long sessions! Perhaps the smartest thing I did was wait until PS Audio Statement interconnects and speaker cables were discounted enough for me to justify buying them; these really helped my system to be more enjoyable!
  13. Hans, I can get BN US discs at 5.25 each. And I can't get the Japanese easily for less than 22 to 25 dollars. So it's only the unusual that I will seek out, not the latest version of titles out three or more times. And the RVG thing. . . I agree that a lot of JRVGs from the first series don't sound that great without polarity inversion and on some systems never. The US RVGs of the last few years sound wonderful. Maybe not in systems that are prone to be bright, but in neutral or dark sounding systems they sound wonderful. I've tailored my system not around the best sounding discs but around the average so that I get more enjoyable listening out of the collection I have. And I'm lucky in that I can tailor the sound of my speakers by changing some resistors at two sets of binding posts easily accessible, AND my latest player with very little digital filtering has made me change my preferrences in discs "signatures" and made it easy to enjoy a number of types of discs from early digital to dvd to SACD to recent Redbook releases. So I'm in a different boat than you, and less excited about these new BNs. Shouldn't let it diminish your excitement in any way!
  14. What's the difference? About ten dollars a cd. . . . I was just hoping to see titles unreleased to cd. I would get excited about those. As I personally am happy with the RVG sound on my system and becoming disillusioned with the homogenized TOCJ sound, I'm not excited about buying Japanese copies of the same old Blue Notes, that's all.
  15. I really dug that one too, and the theatre was surprisingly populated!
  16. It will probably depend on your system and aural tastes. . . I prefer to listen to the lps though Collector's Choice did a good job . . . . Still the cds could sound a little meatier.
  17. ????? Surely you jest!
  18. Get the Bethlehems, get the Atlantics, get the Candids, get the fifties Columbias and you'll have a good grounding. Then. . . get the REST of them. (I'm a Mingus FANATIC).
  19. I've seen all those RT, and I really love "Crimes and Misdemeanors." Going to to have to watch that again some time soon!
  20. Not like your avatar on the cd covers, rather as the original lp logos were (I believe).
  21. Piano! All kinds of players. Even my little Yamaha digital piano. Piano!
  22. Same old Stuff!
  23. Well I don't agree with you about the RVGs, but I don't want to argue with you about it. I'm really enjoying this Water reissue series; I think the production values are better than the Blue Note cds in many ways, and if they wish to continue licensing these, fine with me. The Phantom sounds so much better in the Water than the Mosaic Select version! And the Gales sound phenomenal. Booklets too are better than EMIs.
  24. I'd really like to see OBLIQUE be RVG'd! AND I want to cast my vote in along with Wes and Tony: more RVGs from the 1939 to 1953 era or so. Art Hodes would be great. A Bechet or three. Maybe some of the boogie piano sessions. . . . I know there seems to be little support from the label for this stuff because they don't think it sells. . . . But man enough hardbop and beyond stuff! B-)
  25. Alright!
