Reiner: the "Sings Johnny Mercer" sounds VERY NICE. I'd welcome many more on this label.

Some great names tossed out here. Definitely agree about Al Haig. How about Mel Powell. And Jimmy Rowles. Those guys get talked about, but both deserve better recognition.

You know the Miles material must be considered "legitimate" because when the estate clamped down on the sale of dozens of bootlegs, the Dragon set was still present offered for sale by the chains and I was told by two jazz buyers that this set was "allowed."

Must agree with Vic, Dragon is a great label and I love the releases I have. Great notes and production values as well as sound.

David, how many sides are there? I know there is one track (Churchmouse) on "The Savoy Story" three cd set. I love his sideman appearances on the Winding and Moore cuts on the "In the Beginning Bop" Savoy/Denon cd.

Don't make me Choose! Not exactly a newbie question, but a question about jazz music. I used to play jazz at a state office supply store I worked at for years and several times when playing early jazz I got asked: "What cartoon did that music come from?" ARGH!

kh, I think this article is snoozarama and could hardly even read its first few paragraphs. . . . BUT I do think that there are "still" jazz fans out there that need to be acquainted to the fact that the last years of Ellington were really fine ones.

Yes, I'll have to get this one day soon. . . ! I've heard the music, but never seen that footage. I really like the Ellington and the Waller in this series as well.

There was also "New Groove." I'm not that fond of the recordings with Brown; they seem too orchestrated and arranged for me in comparison to more free-wheeling earlier works by Pee Wee as a leader. (Brown pretty much was the leader of these I've read. . . .) I don't know what happened to Brown. I remember reading he was a musical instructor (high school level?) and may have returned to that field. I like the comments that Louis Prima made about Pee Wee, who was an important member of his band for a few years in the mid-thirties, something to the effect that Pee Wee could learn a tune in one play through and that he considered Pee Wee "the finest musical mind" he had encountered.

Got my package last night. . . all that I ordered at 4.99 and no shipping and handling. What's not to like?

They might have a LITTLE bit of extra stuff, I wouldn't expect anything considerable. This set will be nice. . . I just won't be in a hurry get it having all the Sisters stuff in J. R. T. Davies remasters, and having read a lot on the gals.
