Miles Davis - Complete Montreux (20CD box)
jazzbo replied to Claude's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Ooops, no that won't work. I thought about that. If I get the shoes, I'll have to keep the shoes, and wear 'em every day. She's on my ass like fruit of the loom about this sort of thing! And she thinks I have ENOUGH box sets. How did she get that idea! -
Mine's "Jazzbo Jim" . . . my greatuncle had one of these in his attic. My grandfather played the banjo as a young man (and organ as an old man). So I liked the handle "jazzbo" and this image as an avatar. Yeah, it harkens back to a time of stereotypes and it's probably not bad to be reminded of that either. My favorite avatar is Kevin's (braggin' just a bit) Let Me Tell You About It, because he tells us all the inside BN scoop!

I have'nt yet picked up this reissue, but this is a good solid release on lp and I'll echo your recommendation. Great playing! This is the kind of "musical" I like!
-
Here's my two cents: Well, I have it. . . and I listen to it. I find it fascinating to listen to a few cds worth of these at a time. You get into a sort of bleak world with spotlights here and there. Great music, makes you sad to remember the Billie of the thirties and early forties, but she still can knock you over in these recordings. . . . You may well just sit tight where you are. It's probably fine to grab the individual releases here and there now and then. But the box is a worthwhile purchase, especially if you can get it from one of the clubs or used at a good price. I find that the sound is good and holds up. . . .

That's good news. MC should get these back in print; he produced most if not all of them, right?

I went with Sonny. Not my favorite by any means, but . . .he fit the bill best.

Nah . . . the shoes she is thinking of just cost about one box set. She would NEVER buy me the box set. -
No, I haven't a copy. About six months ago Bob Belden emailed me the information after I asked him a few questions about what may be on the set. It was very exciting to see it, and I put it I thought into a save folder to save it. . . looking at it made me want to hear it badly! But it appears I didn't save it after all.

I actually received this track listing months ago and was asked to sit tight on it, and did. In fact, I sat on it so tight I lost it! Had personnel information as well. Going to be a very interesting set!

No cake of any kind for me please. I'll just ask my wife to treat me to dinner at the Clay Pit and indulge in a beltbusting meal of chicken korma and their lentil soup. -

Bert, No I don't. Really. -
Well, I had an offboard friendship with Greg for a long time that turned very sour because of my posting about distortions of facts about the pricing of SACDs that Greg had said on the board. . . . It's all a big shame. Yeah, AAJ could get better in time. . . but by then this place will have outstripped it much further!
-
Oh no, another nonfunny imitator, the return of Gregore. Sheesh. AAJ. . . it's so DULL compared to this board. I go and I just HOPE for something to post to, and there isn't much. It's a shame because it is more of an international community (maybe? does the fact that Sigmund and Gregore are from outer space boost this board's internationality?) and it really could be a better board than it is. Just my feelings about the place these days.

No kidding, mine is two months plus away, and my wife was talking about buying me a pair of shoes next week. . . aren't we getting old fast enough? (And SHOES?) -

Gosh, you were given TWO copies? My friends would never think to give me something costing one tenth this set! I'm traveling in the wrong circle. Well, maybe I'll find a used copy cheap some day. This thing is still tempting me, but I can't see laying out the green (which is sparse lately) required. So I guess the really accurate response for me is not "too much music" but "too expensive." I voted for that combo, but it's really the second half I feel is correct. -
My chrystal ball says "Wingy Manone Imperial Recordings" and "Tyree Glenn Roulette Recordings." Darn thing is never right though!

Just bought (being a Powell FANATIC) a 24 bit lp facimile TOCJ of this released last November in Japan. It should arrive in a few days. . . . This should be the last non domestic piece of the puzzle I need for the material in the box set. I prefer the Japanese issues, and/or the US RVGs. Still have to try to find a cheaper copy of the expanded Japanese "Bud Powell Returns" than I have yet seen. . . . That has three additional tracks I've never heard.

I'm reading "Blue Note Records: the Biography." It's fun to read about Blue Note, and the fact that the author has strong opinions and doesn't adore all the recordings is no problem to me. BUT there are some really sloppy elements here, factual-wise, and they really breeze through the first fifteen years or so and the book is heavily lopsided towards the modern recordings which is unfortunate. It's understandable, and I may be among the only ones not really happy about it, but it just doesn't seem balanced to me. Anyway, for most residents this would be an interesting read.

Okay Dmitry, that depends where you live, and I'd really rather have a digital collection of these chronologically, with notes, etc. I'd also rather see Jamal get new fans and new monies from a new program of releases. I don't quite get the "army of one" referrence, but that's okay. Yeah, that two cd set is very nice, though I'd rather see complete reissues than excerpted bits on compilations.
-
I've enjoyed the original for years and years. A masterpiece. The two disc set is a real joy as well. I'm not as fond of the remastering. Too tart for my tastes and system. But not as bad as some.

Brad, the music is remarkably consistently good. Any of the Argo/Cadets should give you an idea. He is also playing brilliantly today and his new material is worth hearing.
