  1. Played two albums from the new Hank Mobley Mosaic Records cd set, I've always enjoyed these two. Hank Mobley "Dippin'" Hank Mobley "Hi Voltage" And then the expanded cd version of Jerry Garcia "Run for the Roses." I neglect this one too much, it's an interesting album. I wanted to evaluate the bass response of my current tube complements and John Kahn's bass sound is a good measurement tool for me.
  2. Me too. I love those Columbia LPs.
  3. This beautiful cd is good for both body and soul. Joe Lovano "I'm All for You" Blue Note
  4. It's a very good set imo. Nice mastering, great music.
  5. Some of us do. Many of us. Some I hear in my neighborhood and among a branch of my in-laws are drinking KoolAid that tells them the media is responsible for blowing this all out of proportion and it's weaponized by Democrats and it's silly to deprive them of their sports and sports-related income. Sigh. I now can't visit my Dad at his own place unless he becomes fatally ill. And they are encouraging him to isolate himself even from the dining room of his facility. I hope this doesn't continue on and on and on.
  6. And "Top of the Heap" and "Turn on the Heat." "Shills Can't Cash Chips" is coming out in June in the Hard Case Crime series.
  7. Yes I collected these in the 'eighties and read them then though I have re-read a number of them since, they're fun. "The Knife Slipped" is still in print. . . . As is "The Count of 9"
  8. I've always loved them and consider them great fun. The earlier the better in some ways, in other ways the later ones are very good. "The Bigger they Come," the first one, is a must. They recently published what would have been the second, "The Knife Slipped," which is interesting to me as it was rejected at the time of writing, not for quality reasons imo. "Spill the Jackpot" is fiun, as is "Fools Die on Friday." It occurs to me that the series was to be a sort of inverse of the Nero Wolfe series. . . I love those books as well.
  9. Yes, there are some fun titles. I like the Quarry series and the A.A. Fair/Earle Stanley Gardner et al.
  10. Back to this one. I wish I had encountered this when released in '85. Has that 'eighties production sound but I'm not holding that against it. Really like the joyous mood of this samba-jazz joint. Tania Maria 'Made in New York' Mahattan Records cd.
  11. My biggest worry so far is for my 87 year old Dad in an assisted-living facility (an excellent one) and to a lesser extent my 90 year old mother-in-law (who lives in her home with one of her daughters). I am so used to visiting my Dad whenever I feel like it, and this is now discouraged and there's only one entrance to the facility which is the farthest one from him so that when I come to get him for appointments or an excursion he has quite a ways to walk. We're being asked to just limit our excursions to doctor's appointments, and it's going to be hard for me who depends on spending time with him. I hope that they can keep him safe from the illness itself with all the measures they are taking. I worry less about my mother-in-law, she doesn't really want to go anywhere but sometimes church, and she seems to enjoy company when they visit but never initiates or invites a visit, and will probably be fine. I feel for anyone who contracts this illness, especially anyone with medical problems. I hope you and all your families remain healthy and safe.
  12. Tania Maria "Made in New York" Manhattan Records cd Followed by Miles Davis "Seven Steps to Heaven" Sony 20 Bit LP facsimile cd. And then disc 1 of "The Complete Verve/Clef Studio Sessions of Charlie Ventura and Flip Philips" Mosaic Records cds.
  13. Yes, I'd like to see several of the Sanders and Live in Seattle with the 2011 remastering.
  14. UHQCD can sound very good. The Paris is a nice album, this and the Time album are the two I like most. Not knowing which masterings are used is a bummer. Universal has been using all kinds of masterings for these. The UHQCD I have on Impulse sound quite good indeed but I'm not sure which masterings were used. There are other Impulse titles coming out from Universal that are MQA encoded as well and do feature new mastering. . . they are not cheap. Those say: Reissue in Hi-Res CD format (UHQCD format x MQA technology). Uses the DSD master produced in 2020 based on the original tapes, and the master is converted in in 352.8kHz/24bit high resolution (perfect for MQA-enabled audio players). Green color label coating. Comes in a slim case packaging. *The disc can also be played on regular CD players in UHQCD 44.1kHz/16bit resolution. However, MQA-enabled hardware/software is necessary to harness the full potential of this Hi-Res CD.
  15. Probably. Don't have a time machine to go back and check.
  16. Yes. . . sorry about the "Cheesy". . . just a typo.
  17. Visited my Dad today. Had to answer questions about my travels and health and have my temperature taken just to get past the lobby of his assisted-living place. Sigh. It's going to be an interesting few years. . . . Listened to two different piano trios today, both excellent, but very different. First the David Hazeltine Trio "The Jobim Songbook in New York" Cheesy SACD. Then Randy Weston Trio, "Piano a la Mode" Jubilee Records Japan cd.
  18. Freddie Hubbard "Straight Life" CTI/King cd Japan
  19. Woody Shaw "Lotus Flower" Enja Japan cd. With Steve Turre, Mulgrew Miller. Nice stuff indeed.
  20. Phil Woods "Live from the Showboat" Sony 2 cd, disc 1
  21. After two days with my in-laws I was hoping for a day of music to rest, but Lucinda decided to stay home from work, altering my plans. She's napping on the couch now so I was able to sneak upstairs and listen to a few discs on headphones (ZMF Ori) on the main system. I started with Betty Carter, "Look at What I Got." I love Betty and this one has crept into my small group of favorites of hers. Great tunes, and I love the way she sings of romance, it seems to mirror my own joys when I find and have it, with an element of unexpected surprise thrown in that I always feel as well. She's less of a daredevil here, more the assured mistress of her art. I think she was one of the very best. http://cps-static.rovicorp.com/3/JPG_400/MI0001/880/MI0001880931.jpg?partner=allrovi.com[/img] And then on to Tania Maria. Wow. I keep forgetting how much I love her work and what a talent she is. She may well be the world's best scat singer and vocalese artists as well as just plain one of the best singers. She can scat and play so wonderfully simultaneously, better than Benson or anyone else I have heard. And she can do the same with whistling, and I may have never heard a more supple and accurate musical whistler. And she has such energy and personality in her compositions, interpretations and performances. I now pronounce her a genius. This is an excellent compilation of her work for World Pacific Records. Tania Maria, "The Best of Tania Maria"
  22. From elsewhere, another listener's post: "19 previously unreleased. This new expanded edition comprises three complete US concerts: Oakland Coliseum, Los Angeles Forum and San Diego Sports Arena, alongside London’s Royal Albert Hall." Sound is reportedly quite good, with the RAH being the one show that is not recorded well.I have the Japanese edition on the way. I no longer have any Cream other than the Disraeli Gears deluxe, so I wanted to add this. Clapton wasn't God, but I loved him a lot more than I've ever loved Bloomfield and NOONE is Jimi. I'm looking forward to listening to the set next week (mine arrives Monday).
