  1. Yusef Lateef "Gong" Savoy 2 LP Followed by Duke Ellington "Jazz at the Plaza, Vol. II" Columbia LP
  2. Nucleus & Ian Carr "Torrid Zone: The Vertigo Recordings" disc 1 Really nice stuff, I've only heard bits and pieces before. Great sound.
  3. The latter. In recent years I've only seen the "fat boy" cases used when there are enough discs in the set that one or more has to have 3 or 4 discs in it to have four spaces in the box itself.
  4. Almost every Japanese Mini-lp cd I have has a printed spine. My set arrived today. Quite a handsome edition! Sound so far is excellent.
  5. Different mastering. Different booklet. Right now. . . . Tubby Hayes "Tubbs" Fontana cd from the new box set of his complete Fontana recordings. Blistering opening track. . . thought I had put in a Johnny Griffin cd by mistake!
  6. I wouldn't read too much into those numbers. I received mine over a week ago and it was in the 800s.
  7. Sonny Rollins "A Night at the Village Vanguard -- Complete" TOCJ Japan Blue Note "24 bit by RVG" 2 cd set, disc 1.
  8. "Bill Evans Trio Live" Verve (from the Complete Verve Recordings box set, disc 6)--previously unissued material with Chuck Israels and Larry Bunker at the Trident Club. Wally Heider recording engineer.
  9. I totally disagree that all of the Evans material was watered down at Verve. Some one could say that about I guess. But much of it is NOT. Especially if you consider the nearly seventy unreleased trio recordings finally presented in the Complete set.
  10. Played around with tubes in my main system today. The change that stuck is I put a six pack of Sylvania 6922 in the ZTPRE and a pair of orange labeled Amperex 7308 in the Monoblocks. Nice speedy but rich sound. Listened to "Bill Evans Trio Live" Verve (from the Complete Verve Recordings box set, disc 5) Miles Davis "Workin'" JVC XRCD Japan (in LP facsimile packaging) "Coltrane '58 the Prestige Recordings" cd box set, disc 1 Maucha Adnet "The Jobim Songbook"

  12. Yazz Ahmed, “Polyhymnia” . . . a very hip listen.
  13. Woody Herman, "Complete Woody Herman Decca, Mars, MGM Sessions (1943-54)" Mosaic Records cd box set, disc 2 Great sound on this box set so far. And some really nice tracks.
  14. They definitely lost track of my Herman preorder and I had to prod more than thrice to get it going, so I recommend contacting Scott and getting that started. It's not the Mosaic of old operations wise, but the sets are worth the effort.
  15. That's interesting, I'm a big fan of Yazz.
  16. Yes, you're lucky that way. Not so lucky here in Ohio. Occasionally I dabble a bit, but the material could be better.
  17. George Benson "Benson Burner" CBS 2 cd set, disc 1
  18. Nope.
  19. That's cool. I don't rank it very highly. We're different. So be it.
  20. I'm aware, I've heard quite a bit. Just not stuff that interests me.
  21. I personally don't care what Sinatra said, I'm not a fan. I've seen alcohol ruin the lives of friends and coworkers and I come from a family that did not drink, as does my wife My late first wife didn't drink either, as her grandfather, father, and two brothers were all severe alcoholics. I'm not a saint, and I do things to make me feel better, alcohol drinking is not among them. For me jazz is far more than background of any kind, let alone cocktails and decor, neither of which I am passionate at all about. I share many activities with my wife, but we have different musical tastes and attach different values to music itself. Which is okay, we are very loving and close. And these little snippets of studio chatter are more valuable to me than these other sounds you disingenuously mention. Sorry that they bother you. They don't bother me. We're all different, and you and I have many differences. I'm not a big fan of movies and movie soundtracks, and you are. Mancini albums are not in my collection. Jazz isn't background for me, and it seems to be for you. Vive la difference.
  22. My wife doesn't listen to jazz with me, and neither of us drink.
  23. A present from my best friend. . . ."American Epic" box set, disc 1. Nice sound, music that isn't normally my cup of tea but nicely selected and sequenced. If I were a neophyte to cds mastered from 78s I'd be really excited about the sound here, but truth is I've spent three decades exploring early recordings and there have been many good restorations and masterings along the way. But it is true there's an immediacy to the music brought about by the technology that is captivating. . . .
