  1. That one sounds great, but I prefer the Columbia box set by a hair for sound, and it sure has excellent packaging (notes, photos). I've not studied the difference between the single and complete releases from Columbia. My guess is that the mastering is the same between the two editions and more material (there is additional material that is not technically "Hot Five and Seven") in the complete set. Get the JSP or the Columbia. . .go complete. . . the music should be encountered. (As you no doubt know).
  2. Charles Bell's "Another Dimension" on Atlantic was among the first LPs I ever owned. I was 14, living in M'Babane, Swaziland where my father was the nation's first US Peace Corps Director. The volunteers there received a "care package" of LPs from Atlantic Records, all mono releases, and one of them gave me the LPs he didn't want, which included two jazz items, this and Leo Wright's "Blues Shout," as he knew I was beginning to be interested in jazz. I love and cherish those two albums. I have purchased the other Bell that I could find.
  3. The Sun Ra is not a needle-drop. Very good sound, which has been the case with the "official" releases of the last few years.
  4. The Sun Ra is a very good sounding CD. Nice reissue and nice music, I've never heard this one before.
  5. Pete Yellin, "It's the Right Thing" Mainstream Records/Solid Records Japan Pete's playing is a little whack, but man this group GROOVES hard.

  18. Yes, I wish I had it but c'est la vie with Japanese imports.
  19. I've only had time so far to play Sweetnighter. Sounds 'f'in' great. Not yet compared it to other recent masterings.
  20. No, though I have a number of the other early Blue Note releases from Japan during this time frame. And I'd love to hear current masterings of the material.
  21. There is no booklet here, no liner notes at all. All disc are in sealed jewel cases and the booklet is just one folded cover with discographic info inside. I've opened a few, I assume they are all this way. So far I have found no engineering or mastering information. I won't be able to do further opening or listening til tomorrow.
