I held off watching Game of Thrones for a long time and gave in finally a few years ago when I found Blu-ray sets cheap. I confess it was not grabbing me at first but then I got into it about halfway Season 1 and kept watching. It's not all to my fancy but the production values are awesome and stay awesome year after year, and some of the characters sort of get under my skin.

If this thread runs long enough, most every Bethlehem will be recommended. Well, maybe not the Francis Fayes. . .

I liked it mostly because it was so Phil K. Dickian. I think it was awesome, but I still think Better Call Saul bests it a bit. That's the pinnacle of the year for me.

I love Bethlehem Records, and I think I bought all but five or six of the most recent Japanese reissue series on Solid Records. I'll agree with what Jim says. And I'll say that there are a number of releases that surprised the heck out of me; I didn't think I would really really like the Joe Derise or Bobby Troup albums as much as I do for example. Or the Sam Most or Charlie Shavers. If you are an Ellington fan the two Ellington albums (and his contributions to the Porgy and Bess record set) are well worth having. The Blakey "Big Band" and "Hard Drive" are excellent, as are the three Mingus entries in the catalog (especially "East Coasting," which is one of my favorite jazz sessions, period. The Oscar Pettiford, the McKusick, the Teddy Charles. . . these too are becoming favorites. . . . Many nice albums. . . .

It's interesting because the engineer should have gotten this down by the time of the tour. But there was so much speed, pot, heroin and other drugs floating around that tour that things went awry. I've been listening to the box set of this tour released last month. I went in expecting I'd be fascinated and enthralled by the electric sets. Instead I have found the acoustic sets to be the real pearls in the set.

Well, the first box set is full of great music. As is this one I guess (Piano Player and Jay Walker are excellent, and I bet all the rest of the material is as well.) So either box would be a good start; depends I guess which you are most in the mood for, earlier or later Duke.

Years ago this would have fascinated me. Today I couldn't even get through the liner notes. Music is communication. That's it for me. It's a LOT for me, but it's communication from one mind/heart to others.

My answer to these sort of things is to leave my collection in chaos as far as indexing and shelving.

I have most of this material on CD and LP but am getting it anyway, to keep Mosaic afloat and also because I really like the Dial Mosaic set and its mastering.This is important jazz material. Really looking forward to the set.
