Sorry, no dollars to go anywhere. I've little sense of humor this week, some major bad mojo going on so forgive me if I didn't get the humor before.

News from home - post your own news here!
jazzbo replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Tim, fantastic news. I've real life knowledge of some of what you've been through.and am so glad that you have beaten that bastard crab and are strengthening again. Best of luck moving forward! -
I'm just saying my system really satisfies me because I don't seem to have to worry about masterings the way others seem to. I like to talk audio, sorry. It's important in my life, and I could probably buy a Porsche with what I have in my stereo systems. I'll get there to that one bogdan but I have little listening time these days and much lined up to listen to.

I've only listened to From G to C so far. About three times (I have had these on cd for some time as well). I think it sounds great. On the Hoffman board several are complaining about the 75th anniversary Blue Note cds from Japan saying they are loud and compressed and bad eq. Most of these sound great to me on my system, with real depth and dynamics. I guess I'm lucky, my Decware and PS Audio component system really gives me a lot of listening pleasure and I don't worry that much about mastering.

Alternating between Torchwood Season 2 and The Americans Season 2, which is a weirdly pleasant method of getting through them.

Three years of Latin in the three years I spent at Waterford Kamhlaba school in M'Babane, Swaziland. My latin teacher was the esteemed Michael Stern, OBE. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Stern_(educator) It was a happy time, but not necessarily because of Latin!

DEEP would kill me but I like Bob Wilbur. And like the curved soprano.

I've done a few comparisons and imo the Mosaic sounds better. More body to the sound and more dynamics. It's not as if Mosaic worked miracles, but the sound is better.
-
I haven't gotten through all the set but so far the "questionable audio quality" is only on those disc 2 tracks.

Of course not, he was mentioned in the second post.

Understood. I've no ambitions and will probably have to spend many many hours just recouping and regrouping to somewhere near what I was.

No, I don't roll that way, I just teach myself and that's that. Worked for me in the rock and blues/rock bands I played in, and I added some Kenny Clarke like jazz features as I went along which I think helped that music out. So I haven't searched for anything of a formal exercise nature.

Thanks for that notice Chuck, I shouldn't have but ordered it, will be fun to go through with Dad.

I've read most of the notes and they're very good. They hold and compile together a lot of interesting material for the bebop connoisseur as well as the neophyte. It takes a bit of getting used to some of the combinations of sessions on discs here, especially for someone like me who has more often in the past listened to these sessions on the Savoy/Dial set, or Master of Jazz etc. discs. But that said the discs play very nicely from start to finish. I'll just quickly say I continue to disagree with the idea that these sounds are digital in nature. That does not make sense according to what Mosaic and Jonathon have reported about the "cleaning" methods, and they just don't sound that way to me. But regardless I don't think these sounds make enjoying the set impossible, certainly not for me. The music I've heard for so long that I just don't know what to say about it. I think it's IMPORTANT music in my listening world and for jazz fans and scholars. I have been enjoying the sessions I haven't paid a lot of attention to previously such as the Erroll Garner and the "Home Cooking" material (that, though it's not easy listening, sounds clearer here to me).

I haven't done a comparison, and probably won't as the Spotlite cds are in a box somewhere. . . I moved 20 months ago and do not have room to display all my discs and these are among those in a box somewhere in the garage or spare bedroom. I have not yet played much from the Mosaic that I have on Spotlite cds.

Zoot Sims and Barney Wilen are two players whose sound and playing on the soprano I really love. Zoot has one album that is all or predominantly soprano. Wilen just here and there. Of course, BECHET. That's a given right? You're probably wanting more modern recommendations. . . .?

I don't play along to tunes I'm afraid. I used to practice what few rudiments I do a bit and then just sort of putter about with patterns and weird things. It's been years and years since I did this regularly. I spent about four years rehearsing with a few bands more than we performed, and then I got married and all that fell apart, and that was over twenty three years ago. About six years ago I bought the Roland kit and fooled around some but guitars and basses and even piano have taken more of my time. So if I do get to set up a kit (I'm thinking the Sonor) it will be a whole new thing for the most part. Haven't had a kit set up in over a year and a half.

Thanks, hope you have a great one and yes it will be fun to teach your son. Don't believe in heaven and not looking for rewards, just now trying to keep my father moving forward. He is, baby steps. I'm hoping I get a bit more extra time with my gal . . . my sister and her husband and daughter are coming up by Christmas Eve and that will be a big help. I'm hoping to move fifty miles away and in with my gal in the summer, and if so I may be able to set up one of my drum kits again, she owns a home oust in the woods, I can't play here at my Dad's or my town home, even if I had the time. But I'd like to bang the drums a bit again for the exercise mainly.
-
Yes, that's a hard decision. I can't help with comparisons as I don't have that set. . . I have four I think of the Spotlite cds, but not any from Japan, nor have I heard any of that set. . . .

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
jazzbo replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Now listening to disc 4. Yes, the sound is excellent imo. There are some sounds that you wish were gone, but making them go away I'm sure would damage the sound that is so fine. This is really the best I've heard this Dial material and it's very enjoyable and very important music. -
This Happy Madness Antonio Carlos Jobim/Gene Lees What should I call this happy madness that I feel inside of me Some kind of wild October gladness that I never thought I'd see What has become of all my sadness all my endless lonely sighs Where are my sorrows now What happened to the frown and is that self contented clown Standing grinning in the mirror really me I'd like to run through Central Park carve your initials in the bark of every tree I pass for every one to see I feel that I've gone back to childhood and I'm skipping through the wild wood So excited that I don't know what to do What do I care if I'm a juvenile I smile my secret little smile Because I know the change in me is you What should I call this happy madness all this unexpected joy That turned the world into a baby's bouncing toy The god's are laughing far above One of them gave a little shove And I fell gaily gladly madly into love
