I haven't even read the notes. Nice pics. . . I have both the deluxe cd box and the vinyl edition, and the big lp sized book is nice to look at. I've always liked this music, I've had the original two lps since release. Definitely country trappings. It sort of mystified me at first but I love the singing on most songs and there are some nice arrangements. The extra material in the bootleg version is nice but unlike others I don't think it is better.

Jimmy Giuffre is dead, your dad thankfully alive. There is a difference there. Of course it is great if an artist receives the royalties he is entitled to, especially because too many do not. I am bit partial about "estates" receiving royalties. I could not care less if children of an artist receive royalities. Spouses are a different story. It is nice, if you are able to contact people and find out, if someone is receiving royalities. However this is not practical for most releases. I bought an Laura Nyro live recording and of course I have no idea if anyone is receiving royalties. To base your purchasing decision on something you cannot influence is a bit strange. Who knows what deals artist may have signed in their lifetime. You are however influencing things if you buy illegitimate recordings--you are fostering more of them. And influencing whether an official release may be made. It's a complicated thing and I'm no saint. . .but I do hold off on buying often for a handful of reasons.

John, I have the entire series, can't remember if there are any other unreleased alternates in the series. . . Don't think so. E, I don't find the sound muffled, but "just right" for me, get plenty of clarity!

Well, that's not literally true because he referenced my interview with Michael Cuscuna twice and that was information that had not been out before at all easy to find, and not avaiable from "Blumenthal and the like" --and I believe there were a few other instances where there was information not often or easily accessed in Cook's book. But you're right in that there was little to no original research and it didn't offer much to a connoisseur of the label. I do think it serves well for a neophyte.

It's not the best, nor the worst book. Sometimes people tear things to shreds for personal reasons, jealousy perhaps.

This two lp set sounds better than it probably ought to, the atmospheric sound is just perfect for tonight. I haven't ever quite decided whether Mingus' work at this time was a love letter to Duke Ellington or &^%$ YOU Duke Ellington. Just such amazing arrangements.
