  1. We may both have said it. I dig Percy and Connie, but I think another team would have allowed me to love the album more.
  2. I love Cannon and I love Evans, but I've never really loved "Know What I Mean." But I'll keep trying. Japan issued a handful of the Capitol albums in the early part of the decade but stopped before "Black Messiah." So I'm glad Dusty Groove has leased it.
  3. That was an LPR digipak in the US.
  4. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I had seen it listed in Japan a few months ago and didn't know what to make of it.
  5. You did right. A wonderful set.
  6. Come on June! (And hey, maybe it might actually be spring by then!)
  7. Does it include the recorded but unissued Sun Ra tribute to Jobim?
  8. I have it. I have been enjoying listening to it with my Dad. The DVDs, five of them, are all good. It's a real bargain.
  9. Many many happy happy returns!
  10. Many many happy happy returns!
  11. Yeah, if Lees story has any merit he got the title of the tune with alternates wrong.
  12. When you take this into account, Ballads is an amazing achievement by a working quartet that was firing on all cylinders: from wikipedia Critic Gene Lees stated that the quartet had never played the tunes before. "They arrived with music-store sheet music of the songs" and just before the recordings, they "would discuss each tune, write-out copies of the changes they'd use, semi-rehearse for a half hour and then do it". All the pieces were recorded in one take, except for "All or Nothing at All"
  13. I don't think they've come out. I have the Japanese (Solid) versions, they're worth keeping and I wasn't planning on getting the US versions.
  14. I have those too, don't need or want to rebuy them.
  15. I'm so relieved! I'm not tempted to order any of these.
  16. 11 years of friendship and conversation! Thanks!
  17. I honestly feel at some point in the second half of the last century there were so many things going on under the "jazz" umbrella that it makes perfect sense why some would say "this is jazz" and "this isn't jazz." I find myself doing that with the music. I mean. . . I don't consider "Dark Magus" jazz. Others may but I would need some real convincing. It doesn't matter. In my opinion anyone is free to classify jazz the way they wish as long as they're not holding "jazz" up on a pedestal and raining on everything else.
  18. Lester Young solos.
  19. I was just speaking for myself as well. Just sort of see them polluting the cohesive excellence of this set.
  20. Yes, they're great tracks, I have them elsewhere, I just don't want them here, I like this as the four nights complete, in excellent sound quality.
  21. Hope it's a great one Larry, and many happy returns!

I listened to this one time through while doing other things, not sit down listening. I liked what I've heard. It's not going to please those who want DR13 mastering, but it's a good sounding disc with some interesting interpretations.
