  1. I'm also a fan. See "Safety Not Guaranteed."
  2. That's a really good idea there. It'll come right out after Pop Market puts out "The Complete Columbia Recordings of the Buddy Bolden All Stars."
  3. That's interesting because I've always listened to bassists with interest and excitement. From Duke to Coleman, the bass has always been a way into the music for me. May explain why now in my midlife crisis period I own a contrabass violin and three Fender basses, an Epiphone, and a "Wishbass." Garrison ALWAYS captures my attention. Just finished listening to him here:
  4. Great posts epistrophy, thanks.
  5. Stay birthday my friend.
  6. Don't know if I've heard that one. I've always enjoyed her first two. Thanks for the update.
  7. Many many happy returns Chris! Hope all is well.
  8. I agree. Music that dances. Garrison holding it down and together. The music was different with Steve Davis, Reggie Workman . . . . The way that Jimmy was melodically and rhythmically inventive and had the stamina to stay right with the others. . . so bloody impressive.
  9. I'm leaning towards cremation. I don't need anything sprinkled on me. When I draw my last breath, I'm gone. I'm not hurrying that day along, but I have no expectations past that point.
  10. An amazing player. Owning a contrabass violin I have an idea of what mastery and vision he had to own and maintain to anchor that quartet. His playing has long impressed me, and I'm a huge fan of his musical "attitude."
  11. Bon anniversaire Guy!
  12. Freelancer, Japan just recently released "Soul Groove" on cd, sounds amazing. And I have an extra copy of the Joe Caroll I could sell you, quite cheap.
  13. Brooks, you're going to acquit yourself well and have a helluva time!
  14. Many many happy returns!
  15. Could it be material from: 670 195 Paul Barbarin / George Lewis And His Ragtime Band* Jazz From New Orleans SLP 103 George Lewis (2) A Musical Tour Of New Orleans (LP) Or this may be what's on the Sounds Of New Orleans Volume. SLP 128 Bunk Johnson's Band With George Lewis (2) 1944 (LP) SLP 4022 George Lewis (2) In Concert (LP, Album, RE) Is this Hangover material?
  16. King Jazz won't be anything new. The only Strayhorn I remember is this one, which was not originally Storyville material (and I love the stuff): http://www.allmusic.com/album/release/piano-passion-mr0000348734 There were Lewis lps on Storyville: http://www.discogs.com/label/Storyville
  17. I doubt we'll see it in December. Maybe. Will be a good set.
  18. Started Mad Men Season 5 on Blu-ray. One of the best seasons, loved it on broadcast. Just finished tonight's Sons of Anarchy. This season is amped up!
  19. Good points Cliff. Early on I wanted to have all the Monk and Mingus possible. I've got a large portion of what's available, official and unofficial from these two artists, and I'm still learning from the recordings, definitely still enjoying them. I'll confess that this is in a large part a "collecting" thing, but I very much enjoy the listening. The collecting part has a diminishing control on my time and money, thank goodness, but it's still strong.
  20. Many happy happy returns Greg!!
