  1. I had been in Austin only a few months and my girlfriend had recently arrived from Ohio and things were always interesting. That day I was working in a sign shop and each customer that came in seemed to have to talk about it. I didn't have a really personal reaction as I've never been a big Beatles fan, and even though John was probably my favorite, it didn't really hit home to me HARD. Over time as I've learned more about Lennon during his final decade, I began to realize what a loss this was. And I can understand why this meant MORE to some others. What's hard to believe is that it's been thirty years. When I think back, it doesn't feel like thirty years. In some ways, the time, my whole life in Austin, has gone by so quickly. And yet the time is cram full of events and feelings and . . .stuff.

  18. Wow, nearing the conclusion of this one, and I really have to say the three sequels I found quite interesting. Very interesting about "machine intelligence," and the prescient discussion of terrorism, and I really was intrigued by the idea of an enemy race of energy beings who were trying to recreate the universe without matter. And. . . spoiler below. . . .. I was totally blown away how at the end of the third book you realize your friendly neighborhood narrator. . . has been dead the whole time he's narrating to you!
  19. Many happy happy returns David!
  20. She doesn't deserve to get one of the worst things you can. Sad news. I'm hoping for the very best.
  21. Hope it's been great!
  22. I hear ya. I remember my youngest brother (trumpeter, jazz nut) in his loneliest of days said he saw a Bill Cosby show (the one where he played a coroner?) where at a cocktail party a Monk tune was playing and a woman told a guy at the party "Oh I just love Monk!" My brother said "I would KILL to meet a woman who could even recognize that tune!" Turns out a year later he met a woman who was a violinist and a classical lover and they married six months later. But . . . she doesn't like jazz really. Their two daughters do though!
