  1. The good thing about that domestic charge is. . . doesn't matter how many you order, one price.
  2. Congratulations Erik! All the best!
  3. Hope it was a great one Bill! Many happy returns.
  4. Hope it was a great one!
  5. Many happy returns lovely Elissa of the beautiful avatars!
  6. More of the scary Kathleen Turner in Californication Season 3.
  7. I'm out until either I upgrade the operating system on one laptop or repair the dead other one with the newer operating system. At this time I can't use the new downloader.
  8. I'm pretty sure the quote is in Reisser's "Bird: The Legend of Charlie Parker." Hans, yes it should be that way but I've heard others speak it "could care less." Actually I think the quote is "never heard of him, and care less." http://books.google.com/books?id=qwX3f_CC2SUC&pg=PA51&lpg=PA51&dq=Charlie+Parker+as+A+symbol+to+the+Negro+people?&source=bl&ots=HkKFf3YYVj&sig=4oUZ-OncwsPqutENGcqFVfW_2LQ&hl=en&ei=ZKTuTNzzBMGblgfAuoXdDA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CCEQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q&f=false
  9. I did a little detective work. The amazon.com item code is the same as that on this UK Amazon page, which shows the label as Sony Jazz: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Its-Monks-Time-Thelonious-Monk/dp/B0000ALWF3 I've bought other Sony reissues in this series and they're identical to previous reissues in sound and basic design. I'd say go for one of the new copies from marketplace sellers.
  10. You have to have this release just for "Shuffle Boil" and "Lulu's Back in Town." Some of the best of the Columbia tracks. Tom, that LOOKS like a Columbia or CBS release, but you're right, really hard to tell from the information there.
  11. Thanks for mentioning your experience with the book. I agree with the recommendation of Zep Tepi, it's a wonderful recording.
  12. Joe, thanks for the info. I'm going to hold off a little longer. Amazon US finally has that Lester Young two cd set from Storyville for sale cheaper than what it cost me to order from Amazon France some months back, so I'm going to hold off as long as I can. . . .
  13. Nice new cd, great sound.
  14. I haven't bought any of the new reissues. .. I may spring for the live two disc set in the future because the cdr I have from the lps has some distortion. . . . But I'm happy enough, and don't listen enough, with/to the previous issues I have to warrant replacing them. The CTI reissue I'd love to see (and probably never will) is "Blue Moses" as Weston recorded it and intended it, without the overdubbed orchestration.
  15. Californication, Season Three
  16. Hey GA, that's a new one on me, thanks for the post.
  17. Yeah. . . when they have sales.
  18. The only time I got to see Freddie was with the VSOP in Cleveland. I'd managed to score excellent seats at a place with a revolving stage, had a beautiful date, an expedition was planned with two other couples, waited for weeks for the night to come. Freddie hadn't arrived when the show was to start; he had some sort of airline problem. After a long delay, the other four master musicians took the stage and played for twenty minutes. Finally it was announced that Freddie had arrived, he was weaving a bit when he took to the stage. After two solos, he got so bothered by a couple of hecklers (I think) that he turned on his heels and walked off the stage. After that, the quartet wrapped up the tune quickly, took some quick bows and sped off after him. I was crestfallen. What a lost opportunity.
  19. I think Jarrett is an amazing talent and his muttering and whoops don't bother me on recordings. I've never seen him perform. I don't expect to. He's not been anywhere near my city this century. I'll just continue to enjoy his recordings. Some phenomenal work.
  20. Yes, thanks Hans.
  21. My experience mirrors SJ's. The Proper sets I've heard always sounded inferiopr to other labels' sonics. There was always a better option. I don't pursue them.
  22. My condolences Roif. Cherish her memories. They'll get you through.
  23. PBS, "Secrets of the Dead," the one about the Roman shipwrecks.
