I really don't get the sense that Monk had autism or Asperger's syndrome. To me his behavior seems to fall in line with what I know of bipolar disorders, especially perhaps "mixed states." Regardless, he had his way of dealing with the world. . . and succeeded in time despite the inflexibility that could plague him. And because he resisted certain practices and behavior on the part of others, he was able to do so often on his terms, and there's real value in that. I'm up to the second stay at the Blackhawk. This is a great book.

I'm only listening to this now as it just came out and arrived. I listened to it once just to hear it. I listened to it two more times because I ENJOY it. I guess it's easy to make fun of it, but I think it's quite a nice "record."

Well, Chewy didn't say the same about the Armstrong set. . .

Fun.

RVG, Keepnews, K2. . .these don't bother me at all. I think the sound on these releases are excellent and better than what came before. I don't really feel that the name of the series puts these persons as more important than the creators. They signal that the sonics are considered important. I can live with that. Packaging, even album art, aren't ultimately that important to me. The music and the sound are important to me. The Legends of Jazz series was a very nice one! I enjoy many of those releases.

Picture of Al Haig (not Bill Evans) with female bassist

Don't think Jerry Bruno is a woman. I don't have the book. Could it be Carol Kay? -
Well, this image (without the writing) is used as the back cover of the cd booklet. What is the left and right one saying here?
-
Nope. The deal is an Anita O'Day deal.

Well, I think several of you are not giving this a chance. I like it. His voice is as it's been for years and he makes the most of it. The arrangements are very 'fifties in a lot of ways and very well-executed. I don't listen to things by short snippets and make judgments, I didn't listen to any samples, I just ordered it and I'm glad I did. I usually hate Xmas albums but this one is fun.

It's not their best work, but it's worth the downloads. I've had lp and cd versions.

I don't own one. And I'm just selling duplicates here.

There already is one. More than one. Don't be a hater.

There was never an DeFranco/Clark Mosaic on my list.

This album is great fun. If you like recent Dylan, and have any idea you'd like this, you'll like this. Personnel includes Phil Upchurch and Dave Hidalgo.

I haven't had a problem with disc 6 that I'm aware of (I wasn't paying the closest of attention all the time that is was on). The sound quality is superb!! It's packaged like the last one, in a small "cigar box." And comes with a button, green with the "Grateful Dead Movie" skeleton.

Even if you're very wrong!

And Armstrong worshipped Crosby.

It's too true.

AOTW - Monk with Trane - Complete 1957 Riversides
jazzbo replied to GA Russell's topic in Album Of The Week
They're going to say K2 somewhere on the back in the credit sections. The Japanese versions will always say K2 on the obi. I find that some of the regular OJC versions with recent remastering (especially by RVG or Kirk Felton) will best them to my ears on my system, but that's all a personal, subjective thing). They'll not disappoint I wager. K2 is a JVC process, and not just OJC licensed titles or applied the process. Impulse, and other labels also had the K2 process applied to Japanese releases. (I have some great Coltrane K2 reissues). -

I can understand that in a way. . . I feel very similarly about Sinatra and all that Rat Pack posturing and attitude and I still don't get Sinatra's music, partly because of that. But I'm not sure you really do understand why Armstrong did what he did. . . I think an awful lot of that happiness displayed and presented was his real personality. Neither of us can know for sure. I don't like Wynton's presentation. . . but I do like his music. I think you can get beyond that with Armstrong, especially as the Mosaic is not a video set. The joy in the music is real, not manufactured for the nice white folk.

Harry Colomby should defintely have been mentioned in that paragraph. I haven't gotten much more than halfway through the book, but my own experience with mental health issues in a loved one lead me to believe that we'll likely never really know the "mental issues" and we are probably better off that way. It's very nice to know how much of what Monk wrote and how his career evolved was the result of his philosophy of dealing with the world. I am getting a sense of that from Kelly's book.

Yeah, me too. Window's Media Player tells me "The channel does not support the stream format" when I open the URL. I'm using an older iMac running Tiger. Something's different with the new music samples. Thanks for the reply, jazzbo, but I even tried installing a browser plugin from Microsoft called Flip4Mac, but when I click on the sample link, it tries to load the page but never completes. Works for the Louis Armstrong ones though. I"m using Safari, it just opens up in a new Safari window and plays. No problem at all. To thumbsdown angrily the Armstrong is just whacko wearing my shoes. Some of the finest jazz made. Bing is great too, but the Armstrong will be around for a long time and I hope you listen to some single discs or so and finally order it. One of their best sets ever. Wynton would want you to.
