  1. Yes, modern tube amps can astound. And they don't have to have the colorations and unreliability of tube amps of the past. I've heard neither of these amps but I'd wager the Decware will outshine them. Bot of these are built around circuit boards. Probably made in China. Decware products have no circuit boards and are point to point wired using only the parts leads on the parts, very few additional wires. There are very few parts, often just a resistor and a capacitor in the signal path. These amps have one thing over the Decwares: complex functionality, i.e. remote control, multiple inputs. These things are nice, but I live without them comfortably and don't have to compromise sonics to do so. You could call Steve Deckert up and talk to him. He's very communicative. He's an audio designer, has decades of experience, he's a drummer and he does know what music sounds like and wants to replicate it accurately. He's very helpful on the phone, and can recommend amps based on your speakers, listening material, etc. I have two of his amps in use: the Integrated I34.2, and the Torii Mark II. I also have one set of monoblock amps (a sort of custom order, not one of his catalog items) in the closet right now waiting to be used again. I also have two pairs of his speakers, the CSP2 preamp, the "ZBox" and two of his modified disc players. I won't buy from others for amplification or speakers, I'm so spoiled by his products. Anyway, I'm glad you got excited by tube gear.
  2. Totally understood. You could post at the forum board and see if anyone in NYC could let you listen? I'm pretty sure that there are some owners. . . . http://www.decware.com/cgi-bin/yabb22/YaBB.pl Also, you have a thirty day period. . . you'd be out shipping. Few people return these.
  3. Mr. Larsen I was going to recommend Decware products (as always, my entire system is based on their products) until I saw "solid state." But I will say their products have INCREDIBLE clarity, and are more dependable than any others I've owned, and you don't have to worry about their tubes. Every other year you'll replace power tubes. Just pull old ones out and put new ones in. That's it. http://www.decware.com/newsite/tubes.html I'll be glad to assist via PM or on the board should you wish.
  4. That's really hard for me because I have every bit of Mingus I could find, official and unofficial, and your taste and mine are not always congruent. I'll say don't skip "East Coasting" on Bethlehem or "Mingus Plays Piano" on Impulse. Those are wonderful. And you may really dig "Blues and Roots" on Atlantic.

  6. I'm not a Trekkie, and I actually haven't seen a lot of these episodes before this set. Just as with Season One, they've done a phenomenal video and audio transfer of each episode. Season Three is out in December.
  7. Quiet Nights should not have been released at the time in the form it was. It was not finished, maybe it was never intended to be finished, but that was not the album that Miles and Gil wanted us to hear. In my opinion if it's a clunker, it is a clunker produced by Teo Macerio, not Miles and Gil. And despite that I like it. It has brilliant moments!
  8. Blu-Ray of Season 2 of Star Trek. These have never looked or sounded this good, ever.
  9. I certainly respect your opinion, and I expected this one to incite defenders, but I can't listen to this one. I try, and after about three minutes take it off, no matter what point I start from. Years ago I dutifully listened to it straight through a number of times. Not now.
  10. Allen, Niko: all good possibilities!
  11. Have a fantastic day, and keep 'em coming!

I have about thirty. I love her singing. And her piano playing.
  13. I'd buy it even though I have all the stuff.
  14. I'm sure we're going to find defenders of our choices and disbelievers. Here's one: Just doesn't seem like Mingus to me. I've tried to like it. Another: Oh how I wish I could like this one.
  15. WTF? (Why the Face)?

You're possibly right. I came to Peggy, then June, then Chris. . . and seriously listening to them all beginning in the same year. Peggy just gets right to my male core and makes me respond with no effort. June makes me think, her phrasing, her sound, it's intellectual candy for me. Chris hasn't really connected with me, yet, in a similar manner. Give me Carmen McRae! She grabs me in all the ways with her voice and swing and piano and presence.
  17. When I looked, all they had in the bins were copies of the earlier cds!
  18. Okay, we know that Mosaic and the former OJC holdings of Concord never have gotten together for any projects. Maybe now that Concord seems to be phasing out the silver discs that might be different? Well regardless, there are some excellent potential box sets to consider that would result of allowing Michael and Scott to lease sessions. Ones I would buy immediately would be: An Etta Jones Prestige set. These sessions need to be put together chronologically, all sessions together, etc. Some great music. Mal Waldron as leader. Just think how great this would be with Addey mastering! A Johnny Lytle Prestige Mosaic. Why not! A Buddy Terry Select. Maybe there's enough stuff? There are so many more potential sets! I'd love to see your ideas.

Aha! A joke then. I like Chris. I need to listen deeper to learn to love her I guess. Of the three that Flurin mentions I love Peggy and June and like Chris. At least so far.
  20. My heart goes out to everyone touched by this. Get better soonest!
  21. I wish they'd 86 this saving's time thing.
  22. Yes . . . that rare thing: a record company doing a big project right.
  23. Bill, thanks for both of these bits. I wasn't sure when the Bros. began, so thanks.
  24. Angels and Demons speeds by like a bullet. A fun ride and read!
