Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
jazzbo replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That's a great one, but SW and I were listening to the Condon MOB Mosaic. -
It's still (for the moment!) available within the Curtis Amy Select, and it's RECOMMENDED that you get this and fast!
-
These were also on Jazz Unlimited's "Miscellaneous Miles" cd.

Lots of nostalgia included in my revisiting the Beatles by exploring the new reissues. In part I've done so because it's a 'big deal' and there's lots of discussion here, there and everywhere that is interesting to read and participate in a little. I've also been drawn into the music for it's own sake. Remembering it, remembering the feel that Ringo brings to it, the ambiguous feel of John's music and words, the fun and loose way Paul played the bass. Added a nice dimension to the last four weeks. And I know it will continue to bring enjoyment. Personally, I move farther and farther away from valuing one form of music or group of artists more than others. Jazz of any sort is not better than rock of any sort or folk of any sort or classical of any sort. There's gold everywhere.

SS, you haven't gotten there yet but I thought the "Moses" schtick was hilarious.

That's a good record.

Water put it out in a really great reissue.

It's one of Hip-O's imports, they just buy a small quanitiy.
-
I'm not sure what that means either. Jordan's? Didn't know there was a Pearson's.

I found this set description on Hip-O-Select: SITE PRE-SALE DATE: 10/02/09 SITE SHIP DATE: 10/16/09 LIMITED EDITION QUANITITY: 6500 Verve Select uncovers an underappreciated and hardly-compiled segment of pianist Oscar Peterson’s brilliant career – his first U.S. recordings, when he simply played and improvised backed by two of the greatest standup bassists of all time. Debut is a beautifully rendered 3-CD box set that includes 49 Peterson duo recordings – everything he recorded with Ray Brown, or with Major “Mule” Holley, in the brief period before the introduction of OP’s world-renowned trio format. The set features his early singles – notably “Debut” and the hit “Tenderly” – and all of the tracks that would later be released on the Clef and Verve LPs Tenderly, Keyboard and An Evening With Oscar Peterson, plus duo recordings that were included on the LP Nostalgic Memories (an otherwise quartet album). Deep vault research uncovered a gem as well: an unreleased version of “There’s A Small Hotel.” Debut begins with Oscar’s literal U.S. debut: a live recording from Carnegie Hall when the 24-year-old pianist performed for American audience for the first time, in September 1949, when he surprised and wowed the crowd. Oscar became Norman Granz’s go-to pianist for his Jazz At The Philharmonic tour, and Disc 1 of the set also includes his return to Carnegie Hall a year later. Newly discovered on the masters for the 1950 set is an discovered unreleased live performance of “Tea For Two.” Debut has more: the set is housed in exquisite packaging – a 7 3/8” square book reminiscent of classic jazz EPs – that includes extensive liner notes by best-selling author David Ritz, rare photos, reproductions of restored original Clef and Mercury LP and EP cover art, detailed track annotations, a full discography (singles, EPs, 10- and 12- inch LPs), and a chronological “sessionography” with master numbers for serious collectors. Oscar Peterson’s music has also been carefully restored and remastered from the original masters, making this a must-have for music fans.

I really like his explorations of what I think of as "Son of Filles de Kilamanjaro" material.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

It may have something to do with Capitol or Shearings heirs defining how long a disc can be. I remember reading of the Cole set (which had a similar set up) that the heirs (I believe it was the heirs) had a definition at the time that an "album" couldn't be much longer than an hour, or some similar "proviso." -
Yes.

I really like this studio session too. As you pointed out Norm, the session sounds great on the Kind of Blue Legacy two cd Anniversary set. There has been a Columbia cd (2001, seems out of print now but cheap from amazon marketplacers) of the Plaza Hotel material that has the same mastering I believe as in the Miles-Trane box set from Columbia. That mastering sounds improved from the version you have, but not incredibly, the source recording is not great.

Thank you Allen. To all, if you want to know about the Beatles, enjoy the books and CD's. If you want to know about the 60's, try reading Arthur Schlesinger's "Robert F. Kennedy and His Times", David Halberstam's "The Best and the Brightest" or any number of other books. Try listening to early Bob Dylan, P.F. Sloan's "Eve of Destruction", Spanky and the Gang's "Give a Damn", the Temptations' "Ball of Confusion" or any number of other songs. Hendrix's tweak of Dylan, "Let us stop talking falsely now, the hour's getting late", capture more of the 60's than the entire Beatles catalogue. For us in the US, the Beatles were an escape from the reality of the 60's, not an embodyment of them. "Beatlemania" was so intense largely to flee from the constant awareness of the twin horrors of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the JFK Assassination. "All You Need is Love" was a pleasant fairytale, a pipe dream, not an experiential reality even then. Things may have appeared different in England or in retrospect, but not here then. Especially if you were a teenage boy facing the draft. Thanks guys. Kind of how I see it too.

I guess I'm a big fan. I have all the official catalog, and quite a bit of unofficial recordings. Flurin gives you good recommendations. Don't neglect the material released by OJC. I find I am most charged by his earliest work, and his most recent. Long may he run!

Many many happy happy returns!

I can second Allen's opinion of the Echo Park; I have one and it's a gem. -
Right, I guess I dont' think of one specific "missing link" but that is the definition. What do you thnk of this theory of "walking erect for sex!'
-
Interesting. Nice that this was a find in Ethiopia. Not sure as the writers that this totally jettisons the "missing link" theory. Will be fascinating to follow this research through the years.
