  1. Is it a cross or is it a shot???
  2. Definitely discussion of this book way upstream the thread. I agree--I've probably read it (in toto) about three times now. I just finished my fourth reading. I was going to recommend the book but Cliff beat me to it. Reading it right now. MacDonald is clearly VERY bright and an incisive critic. He's also a bit...well...grumpy in parts. He really comes down on George for his singing and playing at times. Now, I have often made the point that George was the least of the Beatles in the beginning (not too surprising...he WAS a freakin' kid at the time), but I don't treat it like a personal failing. John and Paul were a force to be reckoned with. And Ringo was an experienced professional when the other three were just getting their feet back in Liverpool and Hamburg. That George had to hustle to keep up at times is only natural. And he developed quickly under the constant pressure to prove his worth in the band. "Abbey Road" is the first and only time that I feel like all four were really operating as equals (or at least near equals) as vocalists and songwriters. With "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun" George had FINALLY written something that was every bit as good as anything Jon and Paul could come up with, without qualifiers or reservations. And Ringo, while never a GREAT singer, had developed a confidence in his voice that allowed him to perform "Octopus's Garden" with something more than just his usual zest. Yes, more believers for the "Revolution In The Head" :tup I agree with the grumpy assesment, I think I said something similar earlier on in the thread, and I agree with the point that he does seem a bit harsh on George throughout the book. Many times I would read some of his analysis of the Harrision tunes and think "fucking hell, give the guy a break, I'm sure he was doing his best". But in fairness he gives credit where credit is due and "Something" is a good example, I really like his last line, "If McCartney wasn't jealous, he should have been". He also pretty much slates anything George did for the "White Album" except "Long, Long, Long", calling it, "at last - the real George" and his "finest moment" on the album, which I think is pretty much bang on. I love the book because he's obviously gotten access that only an Apple insider would have gotten but he doesn't approach it like an Apple insider, he's much more objective and smashes a few legends in the process, eg that the "Abbey Road" sessions were a big hug fest, they weren't, they still had the nastiness toward each other. I picked up the stereo MMT the other day and I have to say I was very disappointed with it in comparison to the mono version, anyone else have both and care to comment, or is it just me???
  3. Yes, I'd go along with that, although I do like a lot of what I've heard the individual members have done on their own or as sidemen, Bags especially.
  4. Does this mean you've been ripped off??? No - amazon only charges the buyer after the seller has confirmed shipping the goods. As a marketplace seller you have to confirm shipment within 7 days - if you don't, the process is suspended until you confirm shipment. In my case, that the seller didn't confirm means that contrary to their statement they didn't have the Brookmeyer Select in stock. Meanwhile they replied to my e-mail that they still await delivery from their US distributor, which means they have no idea what happened. That's cool, I might send you a PM in the next day or two, I may be able to help you if you're still looking.
  5. No I don't think it is, I was going to post something about this myself as my local Tower had a few copies of it for around €30. It seems to be the same set as the 10 disc one released a few years back but without the fancy box.
  6. IMHO, Torres is currently the best forward player in the world. I think Torres proved it again today. He's just so damn good, I know it's only Hull, who are just totally shite, but still a hat-trick is a hat-trick. Torres =   It's good that Rafa was able to give both him and Gerrard a bit of a rest as well. Also I did not see that Wigan result on the cards at all, from the highlights I saw Chelski were just awful, really bad defending from corners which is unusual for them.
  7. Does this mean you've been ripped off???
  8. You gotta admit, this is pretty cool.
  9. Bump.... Any suggestions from our European friends? Bring lots of money, it's a very expensive city, at least it was the last time I was there.
  10. I was away this weekend on a camping trip but managed to read about this on my mobile phone. Seems that they were able to manage ok though, although Pompey isn't necessarily the largest obstacle. I am glad to see Gabby Agbonlahor back in form, though. Yes, they have now buried the hatchet or so it seems, however I'd be surprised if O'Neill doesn't sell him. Nigel Reo-Coker makes his peace with Martin O'Neill Although it pains me to say it, they actually added on the correct amount of time, there was a substitution and Bellamy's goal celebration to take into account. Actually, there might be somthing to your statement after all. Revealed: Manchester United get more injury time when they need it
  11. love that tune. I wish they would come back and play the blues. I always though it was their best tune, really just sums up Zep for me, much more than Hairway to Steven does.
  12. Typical of Lonehill, isn't it? They're so free with the word "complete" in their titles, too! Just want to point out that as far as I can tell, the lonehill referenced above seems to include the original 8 tracks, but does not have the four live bonus tracks included on the Verve reissue that I received today -- which btw has a very nice, crisp sound. The live JATP bonus tracks add Hawkins, Peterson and Gillespie to the original lineup of Ellis, Eldridge, Getz and Ray Brown. Gus Johnson replaces Stan Levey on drums for these last four tracks. Very pleased. Unless you want the Giuffre as part of a lonehill two-fer, I'd go for this verve reissue. Yes, you're right, it was my mistake, I checked the Lonehill I have and it is missing the solo track "Patricia" from the Giuffre album. They don't say anything about this edition being complete either, to be fair.
  13. A nice picture for B. Goren; Yossi leaves them for dead.
  14. I have the Lonehill, it is missing one track from the "Nothing But the Blues" session, I think it's a solo guitar number.
  15. Although it pains me to say it, they actually added on the correct amount of time, there was a substitution and Bellamy's goal celebration to take into account.
  16. I know what you're saying but it doesn't really hold up. What Liverpool really need is for all their top players to start playing well, which has not happened so far this season. Gerrard, Mascherano, Carragher even Torres are no where near their normal levels. They just need to get back to a decent level and they will stop making hard work of all these games they should be winning, without making such a song and dance of it. Alonso was a very good player for Liverpool but not to the extent people are making out, they lost big games when he played and they won big games without him before, so really saying it's all down to Alonso leaving is incorrect. And Chelski would be screwed without Drogba, Man U would be screwed without Rooney, Aresnal would be screwed without Fabregas etc, etc. All teams need their big players to hit their level every game, that's why they're big players.
  17. Again sorry to harp on but "Revolution In The Head" is a very good one stop shop as it just has loads of info. and it's a lot more than just interesting, I mean some of his footnotes are just mind blowing. However this seems to be another good one as it's "official/authorised", he actually was hanging out with them for ages and was a friend, or so it seems. This the cover of the updated one that I picked up over here. I've heard nothing but good things about the BBC sessions, don't have it myself though.
  18. Re "Revolution 9", get the MacDonald book, he has 5 pages on it, seriously. He also makes a very good point about how this was the most avant garde piece of music to ever reach such a large number of listeners, ie it's on a Beatles record. I love "Good Night" BTW, great tune. You really need to get "Revelution In The Head", don't wait until your Birthday. :D
  19. Good job this man wasn't listening to you then. Torres   .
  20. In this, in my opinion definitive, Beatles book. From wikipedia; "In his book Revolution in the Head: The Beatles' Records and the Sixties, first published in 1994, MacDonald carefully anatomised every record The Beatles made, drawing attention to broad themes, particular examples of inspiration and moments of human frailty alike. The book contains forensic song by song analysis; access to the original masters were granted to MacDonald when researching it." Pity he came to such a horrible end, he was clearly a brilliant writer, so much so in fact, I wouldn't actually mind reading his book on Shostakovich.
  21. And if you have "Revelution In The Head" you'd even know what kind of guitar Paul was playing on that very solo.
  22. Yea I didn't mean to sound like I'm not a fan of Ringo because I am, "Rain" and "Tomorrow Never Knows" (especially in the new Mono versions :g ) are years ahead of their time in many aspects including the drumming. He was very important to the Fabs as a whole, like you say it's hard to even think what they would have been like without him.
  23. Sal look away now. Reo-Coker in ruck with O’Neill
