Yeah, I felt his pain. You saw it when he dropped his racket, you saw it in his eyes, you saw it after competing as long as he did to watch it all slip through his fingers. It was hard to watch, but one thing for certian is that my respect for Roddick's game has skyrocketed. What a great competitor he has become! I don't think I have ever felt as sorry for anyone in any sport as I did for Roddick today. The guy must be going through hell, how can you play over 4 hours of tennis against Federer, have your serve broken just once and still lose. Has that ever happened before??? I think it was harder losing the way he did than if he had been just hammered in straight sets, I mean he was playing probably a perfect game and still lost. He also fought tooth and nail just to get to the final as well, while Federer just had some practise games. I have massive respect for the guy, both of them really, they don't play to the crowd either, they just get on with it, what a match.

Pimp Jackson is Talking Now (Luciano's Luci Gets Loco Remix)
Cliff Englewood replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yes that's a great idea, because then maybe someone other than yourself will enjoy it. :D Detroit might have Eminem but Texas will always have you and Vanilla Ice, you be the shiznitz yo. -
Nice one Swede thanks, I'm listening to the samples now and it sounds like they didn't go to the trouble of bringing Eddie's vibes along to the party, the lazy bastards. :D Quality is fine though.

CDs That Skip After Years in Their Cases

Unless the cd is marked in some way I would have to point to the player as well, how old is it? -
Pimp Jackson is Talking Now (Luciano's Luci Gets Loco Remix)
Cliff Englewood replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Ah, so it was a joke, that explains it. I am also really glad "our senses of humor/irony/whatever don't coincide" but I'm even more glad of the fact that I clearly don't have as much free time as you. Keep working on the post modern irony, the kids tell me it's where it's at. -
Can anybody who has the 2 Tal Farlow sets on Xanadu, Fuerst Set and Second Set, that were mentioned earlier in the thread comment on the sound quality? I know they were done in Ed Fuerst's home so I presume they must be more than listenable?

No I understand product placement fine although I'm not sure you do, how would putting this link in a Mosaic or Classical thread work as a product placement? Isn't it more like spam than specific product placement? Thanks to the mods for moving it though. -

I'd love to know that as well, considering how much he was on at Newcastle I'm sure he knew he'd be taking a big drop in wages wherever he ended up because no one was going to pay him that much again. The thing with Owen though is it's not just the time he misses through injury, it's the time it takes him to get back to full match fitness, even when hes able to play, it takes him 2 or 3 games to get up to the speed of things, more than most of the others. -

Does that make any sense to anyone, anywhere??? -

Yes and no, if he stays fit he could be a wonderful addition to the squad but that's a big if. The fact that his best mate Shearer didn't even play him towards the end of the season speaks volumes though. I don't agree that Alex Ferguson is "the country's most shrewd manager", he's bought more that his share of flops, like they all have I suppose but his ones are always expensive, Veron anyone??? -
I say get both, you won't regret it, the booklet with the Mosaic is excellent, and there is some great live stuff on the Columbia set.

No my vision is fine thanks, but as you seem to have all the answers, what exactly does it have to do with Mosaic and other box sets...??? -
Clifford Brown at the Cotton Club... ??
Cliff Englewood replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yes I have that one, it's been out for quite a while now, there are a couple of reviews on Amazon, one of which explains that the tracks are probably not from the Cotton Club at all, it's just a guess, I think the liners say somthing like that also, but I haven't read them in a while. Durium posted and blogged about it a while back as well, here. -

These look really nice, and would (will) suit me fine. Thanks for bringing them up. Hi Paps, Shortly after this post a year ago, I found a Japanese King pressing of both the trio and quintet together on 1 LP. It sounds amazing. I'd stopped looking for the Riker's album, and I haven't been buying in a while, but I'll seek that one out again. -Jay I have the Riker's Island album on cd and although I haven't listened to it in a long time, I don't remember it being all that great, IMHO. It seemed a bit too sloppy or something, maybe it's time to refresh the ole memory. one thing one might find a bit annoying is that the size of the bands are varied from tune to tune; two different singers on one song each (earl coleman is fine but a bit special, the other guy i could never listen to for the whole tune), trio, quartet, sextet... i really like the compositions, also something about the trumpeter and the alto player, they seemed a bit like strangers, somewhat restricted, don't know, but in a good way... and philly joe jones, hope and john gilmore a great, too Yes I was listening to it again last night and my opinion hasn't changed, there are few nice bits and pieces but over all it doesn't really hold one's attention.

A classic "game of two halves" really, once Brazil got one back so early in the second half the US just seemed to implode, no belief. However they did do very well and if they can keep that group together for the WC, they will cause a few more shocks. Well done Brazil though. -
Ha ha. Here's what I don't get. These so-called Andorran labels (and indeed others) issue material which is still in European copyright owned among others by EMI, Sony/BMG, Warner and Universal. This material is distributed throughout Europe and sold by respectable retailers. I'm not talking here about material out of European copyright, or about bootlegs or anything else. Is it really the case that these large companies can take no actions to defend their own copyrights? Can Universal do nothing about Lonehill's Illinois Jacquet and Johnny Hodges issues? Were Warner unable to act against Gambit's Paul Desmond issue? Do Sony/BMG have nothing to say about Lonehill's J.J. Johnson? Do none of these companies at least feel inclined to drop a line to amazon to ask them to quit stocking them? The boots and out-of-copyright issues are an unrelated matter. Here the question is in-copyright material where the owner is a large company which appears otherwise able to police its rights. The usual bluster aside, does anyone have any facts on this? guess these firms are simply lacking the knowledge to find out whether it's their material or not I don't think they are lacking the knowledge, I think they don't really give a shit and if they actually did go after them, the time and money it would take wouldn't justify the end result. I know what David is saying though, there is more chance of finding the grey and black market stuff over here than there is the legitmate releases.

'Pushin' Too Hard' and 'Can't Seem to Make You Mine' are so good, they are highlights from the "Nuggets" box set. Anyone who came up with these two bad boys has got to be cool.

The Mosaic trade thread
Cliff Englewood replied to Dave James's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I don't suppose anyone out there is tired of/bored with their "The Complete Capitol & Atlantic Recordings of Jimmy Giuffre"??? If so I have a "The Complete Argo/Mercury Jazztet Sessions of Art Farmer/Benny Golson" that I would be willing to trade. A complete long shot I know but....
