  1. Orchestral date: There are actually three with Benny Bailey:
  2. DO NOT MISS the 3 volumes of Swiss Nights.
  3. The box set, IMHO, is not optimal. It only includes his trio & quartet studio dates for Steeplechase. It excludes: larger groups (such as the Dexter/Benny Bailey Quintet), the orchestral date, the burning live dates from the seventies, and the archival live dates from the sixties.
  4. Release date February 15: Release date March 15:
  5. Thanks for posting that. Jonas Mekas was part of the scene I became aware of as I came of age, reading The Voice and becoming aware of the fervent creativity going on in NYC. RIP.
  6. Coincidentally, I've been working my way through the JSPs - I'm listening now to disc 3 of box 4. I wouldn't say every disc is of equal audio quality. Some are louder than others (though I haven't been taking notes to tell you which is which). Some tracks share a dull quality with Sony reissues. I can't speak to the Bluebird 2-fers to say if those were any better. Still, they're all listenable (except maybe for box 1 disc 1 - very early and raw), and, as Allen pointed out, they are complete.
  7. This looks like it's from around the time Phil was booking acts at the West End Cafe (near Columbia U.). He used to often book The Countsmen (alumni of Count Basie's band), so that might be a clue. Could the man in the middle be Roy Eldridge?
  8. The Art Ensemble Of Chicago And Associated Ensembles (ECM): $79.15 https://www.amazon.com/Art-Ensemble-Chicago-Associated-Ensembles/dp/B07HGBR8YJ/
  9. Done. Thanks for keeping this going, Jim. The last year turned out to be a good one, dearth of new releases notwithstanding.
  10. Often the F drive will only show if you have a disc in it.
  11. Try plugging in an external USB disc player and see if you get the same or different results.

  14. I'm listening now to The Real...Sarah Vaughan, which has 35 of those '50's recordings. Some of the poppy stuff really is dreck; I don't blame Vaughan for being angry at the material.
  15. I saw that double bill at Irving Plaza in NYC around 1984.
  16. Here's the back of the box track listing for that United Archives release: 62 Columbia tracks + 10 add'l.
  17. I just noticed this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Sarah-Vaughan-Discography-Denis-Brown/dp/0313280053
  18. Did Mosaic ever release Armstrong's 1946-47 studio recordings done for RCA?
  19. Happy happy!
  20. It's now back up to regular price. We'll see if they honor the lower one.
