  1. Release date April 5:
  2. Release date March 29. 'The Music Never Stops' is a beautiful piece of unheard history: an archival recording of a concert headlined by the late, great vocalist Betty Carter. Recorded in 1992, the show was a centerpiece of one of Jazz at Lincoln Center's earliest seasons. Carter titled the singular show 'The Music Never Stops,' because, well, the music never really stopped. She assembled three trios, a big band, and a string section on the stage and darted back and forth between the different ensembles, transitioning seamlessly and effortlessly between burning be-bop and deeply felt ballads, wearing out the musicians with her stamina. The album highlights the legendary Carter's many talents: her effortless way with a melody, her endlessly inventive improvisations, and her unparalleled ability to build both a narrative and a mood by spontaneously weaving jazz standards and her own genius material together. But this concert wasn't just another night for Carter, and the record also features contributions from some of the best contemporary jazz instrumentalists working in NYC. The music contained everything one would anticipate from Carter: mesmerizing balladry, exhilarating swing, impeccable lyricism, stunning improvisation, and brilliantly constructed song-stories that are still visionary today.
  3. I remember that, even though I only saw it on our black & white TV. But yeah, stern voice, blaring brass...it sounds more like a warning than an invitation.

Congrats on the book...I'm looking forward to reading it! Will there be an accompanying CD?
  5. Does he talk about Blossom Dearie?
  6. This always scared me. It felt very foreign (and the cheap, ominous animation, and the white flakes and film wear that were often on the visuals didn't help). I'm still not a fan of kettle drums and blaring brass in music, in general.
  7. Craft is a Concord imprint. See: https://craftrecordings.com/about-us/
  8. Happy birthday!

  10. Interesting...the same year BN went full-on into modern jazz. And didn't they go into hibernation in 1946? The "official" explanation is that Lion wanted to fully understand the changes going on in the jazz world, but there may have also been a change in the business side. Maybe something like: Lion wanted to go fully modern, Margulis was a moldy fig, they didn't agree, Margulis wanted to get out, it took some time for Lion to get the funding to buy out Margulis.
  11. So, with time, has it held up - is it good music?
  12. RIP. Great, great illustrator.
  13. Larry, I wonder if you've heard volume 5. I've started listening to disc 2, and it continues to confirm my earlier impressions: sound levels are low and transfers sound dull. Listening now to "Love, I'd Give My Life For You," and it sounds sad compared to the two versions currently on YouTube. Would love to hear some of these transfers done by Off The Record, or even straight from 78 to CD.
  14. Just noticed this series on eMusic. While CDs are expensive on Amazon, d/l's are pretty cheap on eMusic. Here's a list: https://www.emusic.com/search/polish radio jazz archives/albums Some titles are intriguing (I haven't heard any). Johnny Griffin/Kenny Drew Quartet doing a 20-minute version of Now's The Time?
  15. These Proper sets are usually a good place to start. I've found their sets to be intelligently curated, with accurate discographical information. I have their Bix Beiderbecke set, for example; even after getting the Mosaic box, I kept the Proper for the Paul Whiteman tracks that aren't on the Mosaic.
  16. If you want to hear it now, download it from eMusic for $7.49: https://www.emusic.com/album/196939053/Sun-Ra-/Monorails-and-Satellites-Vols-1-2-and-3
  17. I bought the CD based on Ubu's heads-up. Not the same concert or tour, since the CD doesn't list a pianist - the group is Masuo, Cranshaw, Lee, Mtume. Interestingly, the pianist in the above clip seems to be Walter Davis, Jr. (see @ 7:30).
  18. Newport Jazz Festival All Stars (Wounded Bird version) - $3.98 prime on Amazon
  19. The other interesting note is that Wilson's second BN album, Easterly Winds, is solid classic BN, from the band, to the recording at Rudy's, to the cover by Reid Miles and Francis Wolff. Produced by Duke Pearson (after Lion's retirement).
  20. Not sure which is the "official" Zappa thread in our Artists forum, so I'll post this in both (can they be combined?): https://www.zappa.com/news/frank-zappas-beloved-live-double-album-zappa-new-york-celebrated-suite-40th-anniversary

  22. Larry, thanks for recommending the Shearing/Adderley disc. Just finished listening to it - superb!
  23. I wonder how Jack Wilson got to Blue Note. His first BN album wasn't produced by Lion or Wolff, instead by Jack Tracy. All west coast musicians. Not a typical BN production.
