Very hip!

Interesting...the same year BN went full-on into modern jazz. And didn't they go into hibernation in 1946? The "official" explanation is that Lion wanted to fully understand the changes going on in the jazz world, but there may have also been a change in the business side. Maybe something like: Lion wanted to go fully modern, Margulis was a moldy fig, they didn't agree, Margulis wanted to get out, it took some time for Lion to get the funding to buy out Margulis.

So, with time, has it held up - is it good music?

RIP. Great, great illustrator.

(RIP) Is Jack Wilson (Atlantic & Blue Note 60s pianist) dead?

It's Don Was now. -
Larry, I wonder if you've heard volume 5. I've started listening to disc 2, and it continues to confirm my earlier impressions: sound levels are low and transfers sound dull. Listening now to "Love, I'd Give My Life For You," and it sounds sad compared to the two versions currently on YouTube. Would love to hear some of these transfers done by Off The Record, or even straight from 78 to CD.

Just noticed this series on eMusic. While CDs are expensive on Amazon, d/l's are pretty cheap on eMusic. Here's a list: https://www.emusic.com/search/polish radio jazz archives/albums Some titles are intriguing (I haven't heard any). Johnny Griffin/Kenny Drew Quartet doing a 20-minute version of Now's The Time?

These Proper sets are usually a good place to start. I've found their sets to be intelligently curated, with accurate discographical information. I have their Bix Beiderbecke set, for example; even after getting the Mosaic box, I kept the Proper for the Paul Whiteman tracks that aren't on the Mosaic.

Sun Ra "Monorails and Satellites Vols. 1, 2 and 3"
mjzee replied to soulpope's topic in New Releases
If you want to hear it now, download it from eMusic for $7.49: https://www.emusic.com/album/196939053/Sun-Ra-/Monorails-and-Satellites-Vols-1-2-and-3 -
I bought the CD based on Ubu's heads-up. Not the same concert or tour, since the CD doesn't list a pianist - the group is Masuo, Cranshaw, Lee, Mtume. Interestingly, the pianist in the above clip seems to be Walter Davis, Jr. (see @ 7:30).

The other interesting note is that Wilson's second BN album, Easterly Winds, is solid classic BN, from the band, to the recording at Rudy's, to the cover by Reid Miles and Francis Wolff. Produced by Duke Pearson (after Lion's retirement).

Not sure which is the "official" Zappa thread in our Artists forum, so I'll post this in both (can they be combined?): https://www.zappa.com/news/frank-zappas-beloved-live-double-album-zappa-new-york-celebrated-suite-40th-anniversary

Larry, thanks for recommending the Shearing/Adderley disc. Just finished listening to it - superb!

I wonder how Jack Wilson got to Blue Note. His first BN album wasn't produced by Lion or Wolff, instead by Jack Tracy. All west coast musicians. Not a typical BN production.

Orchestral date: There are actually three with Benny Bailey:

DO NOT MISS the 3 volumes of Swiss Nights.

The box set, IMHO, is not optimal. It only includes his trio & quartet studio dates for Steeplechase. It excludes: larger groups (such as the Dexter/Benny Bailey Quintet), the orchestral date, the burning live dates from the seventies, and the archival live dates from the sixties.

Thanks for posting that. Jonas Mekas was part of the scene I became aware of as I came of age, reading The Voice and becoming aware of the fervent creativity going on in NYC. RIP.

Coincidentally, I've been working my way through the JSPs - I'm listening now to disc 3 of box 4. I wouldn't say every disc is of equal audio quality. Some are louder than others (though I haven't been taking notes to tell you which is which). Some tracks share a dull quality with Sony reissues. I can't speak to the Bluebird 2-fers to say if those were any better. Still, they're all listenable (except maybe for box 1 disc 1 - very early and raw), and, as Allen pointed out, they are complete.

This looks like it's from around the time Phil was booking acts at the West End Cafe (near Columbia U.). He used to often book The Countsmen (alumni of Count Basie's band), so that might be a clue. Could the man in the middle be Roy Eldridge?
