Mosaic and customs tax: I remember that Mosaic usually put a $5/disc price on the customs declaration sticker. This is why I never had to pay customs tax on the sets I bought from Mosaic. I haven't been as lucky with the sets I auctioned on Ebay.

There are two other Sonny Rollins 2CD sets released in october by BMG France: - Sonny meets Hawk / Our man in jazz - The Bridge / What's new "Our man in jazz" has bonus tracks. I don't know which remastering they have. Those albums had already recently been remastered in 24bit by BMG France. I had the "Bridge" reissue but wasn't very satisfied with the sound. It only sounded brighter than the early 90's CD, but not better. The Classic Records gold disc from the 90's is much better. There is now also a new 2003 US remastered version, made from the original three-track tapes.

Deepdiscountcd.com has become less interesting lately. I always check the prices at several US online stores and usually end up at CD Universe. One big advantage are their sale prices on preorders. They also have more options on ordering (ship when available or ship complete, combine orders, cancel orders).

I love the excerpts from Monk's Columbia studio sessions in "Straight no chaser" But Dominik Benedikt's "Blue Note Story", the only Blue Note documentary movie I know had no movie clips, it only showed stills. And I'm sure that Blue Note itself would already have used every available movie, for promotion etc, like they use Wolff's photos.

The only reason would be an improvement in sound. I haven't heard the new box, but the single album releases in the Verve Master Edition series sound better than the 10CD box, which has been remastered in 1988.

Very difficult to choose. Personnally I would like to see Abdullah Ibrahim because he is a legend and I like his music, but on the other hand I would prefer to hear him with a band. My other choices would be Elvin Jones (could be your last chance to see him on stage), John Surman, Rava/Vitous (who is Cañizares?).

Hans, if you have the japanese Coltrane Atlantics, what is you opinion on the remastering? I think these are not so good recordings, or the tapes are in a bad shape (especially the "Bags and Trane" session). I have the "Giant steps" MFSL CD, and while it is improved compared to the box set it still doesn't sound nearly as good as most Prestige or Impulse! sessions.

I think this licensing deal is long over, Bellaphon isn't active in the jazz import field currently. I've never seen a Concord/Bellaphon CD here. http://www.discogs.com/label/Bellaphon_Germany

I have always been lucky with my nearly 40 CD shipments from the US, nothing has ever been lost. One Mosaic set auctioned on Ebay spent a month in customs in my country (unopened ) before I tracked it down, one single CD shipped seperately by CDUniverse took 6 weeks to arrive, but at the end I always received what I ordered.

I admire not only John's technical knowledge on the use of software but also his brilliant graphical ideas. Yesterday I browsed through a Blue Note cover book to look for suitable objects, but the ideas for animation that came to my mind were never as original as John's.
