  1. Johnny Marr last night at August Hall in SF
  2. Threadgill - disks 7&8 A LOT of gems in this set!
  3. Will do! Yeah, that was my impression, too.
  4. I need to listen to that more. Maybe it's the mix, but I always have trouble understanding what's going on.
  5. I always liked Adams/Pullen, too. Unfortunately I never saw them with Mingus, but I saw the Quartet a number of times and they never failed to impress. They really had that "inside/out" style down cold. As for Bruce - I saw him in '76 and '80. Never as big a fan as most of my friends. Yes, he puts on a VERY energetic and LONG show but like some of you I can't say I enjoy spending much time listening to him. I saw him again in 2012 at SXSW in Austin. He gave a Keynote speech which was interesting, for sure. And then gave a concert at the relatively small Moody Theater (where Austin City Limits is filmed). Also an entertaining show, and I was able to be fairly close to the stage. Glad I saw the show, but again - I didn't feel like I had seen "God" or anything.
  6. I really like both of the Shakill's albums! I wish he had recorded more of them.
  7. Didn't know that. He's coming back to SFJAZZ in a few weeks to play with his own group, the "New Breed"
  8. Tonight at SFJAZZ: Scott Amendola drums, electronics Wil Blades Hammond B-3 organ Jeff Parker guitar Cyro Baptista percussion Should be a lot of fun and they're here all weekend. I might have to catch another show.
  9. The Baroness: The Search for Nica, the Rebellious Rothschild, by Hannah Rothschild Really interesting. Quite a life, even BEFORE she moved to NYC to hang out with the jazz elite. In fact there's very little about Monk, NY, etc in the first 1/2 of the book.
  10. Cool - thanks!

I agree, too. I don't mind Riel's drumming, either. I think it's a little different and fits with the unique feel of the album.
  12. I was fortunate to see both of those Big Ears performances. Very enlightening!

The first time I ever heard Mark Murphy was on this album. I still like his contribution here.
  14. AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. Someone really oughta grab the Thad Jones and Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams sets. Two of my favorite Mosaics!
  16. That was playing at the Big Ears Fest last month. I didn't get to see the film, but I saw HIM a couple of times: solo and with Jason Moran.
  17. I saw Kieran Hebdan & Mats Gustafsson at the Big Ears Fest in Knoxville a couple of weeks ago. Great performance!
  18. I'm sure Amazon would take a return, if it's not right. It's just that the price point is common for the 2-disk set, not the box.
  19. My friend went and thoroughly enjoyed it. I saw both Roscoe and Evan a couple of weeks ago at the Big Ears Festival, but not together.
  20. This looks suspicious. The picture shows the long box and track listing as 5 disks, but the "Product Details" say this: Audio CD (15 Nov. 2010) Number of Discs: 1 Format: CD+DVD, Box set
  21. Good refs on those labels!
  22. I've listened to most of it by now and it's an excellent set! I never had the boots, so it's all new to me, and much more interesting and explosive than I was expecting.
