  1. THIS should be good! Ralph Towner, solo / John Abercrombie Quartet Thursday, February 23, 7:30pm at SFJAZZ Center, Miner Auditorium
  2. Great, thanks! I've listened to one or two Explosions in the Sky albums and don't like them. Seems like meandering power trio jamming - but maybe I'm missing something.
  3. OK - this is interesting. I'm not familiar with a lot of these bands. I have a couple of Tortoise albums that are so-so, and heard about Mogwai for a long time but never got any. What are some "post-rock" bands that are active and producing good albums? That's what I would be most interested in. I like bands that I might have a chance to see live.
  4. Going to the Tony Williams Spotlight at SFJAZZ on Thursday. Should be pretty exciting with this lineup of artists. CONCERT INCLUDES PERFORMANCES BY Zakir Hussain · Joshua Redman · Terence Blanchard Mary Stallings · Joe Lovano · Bill Frisell Stefon Harris · Cindy Blackman Santana Eric Harland · John Santos · Kronos Quartet SFJAZZ Collective
  5. This was only 2-3 tunes and the sound problem seemed to have something to do with a faulty cable. I've heard at least one of his live albums and was a little under-whelmed, myself.
  6. I saw Joey D a few months ago in the Bobby Hutcherson Memorial Concert at SFJAZZ. He only did a few tunes, but seemed pretty locked in even though there were sound problems with his B3.
  7. Jim, you and your wife sure have an eye for design. I was just about to mention the Eames/Miller shelving unit in the current episode, too! We also have one of those red molded plywood chairs and a George Nelson slat bench that you showed, but they're not vintage - they're about 6 years old. When we moved we went 'Herman Miller shopping' and also got a "surfboard table" and a dining room set. These are examples of 2 of the Grossman lamps we have.
  8. I'm kind of addicted to the Roadshow, too. Haven't seen many of the UK editions, though. Those items you kept are very cool for sure! Are you familiar with Greta Grossman? I have a few of her original Cobra-style lamps - both desk and floor models - that my parents bought 'way back when'. Also lucky to have the classic Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman from the 60s (or maybe earlier).
  9. Yep - sounds great! Like a small, jazz-oriented South by Southwest. I've been going to Austin for the past 10 years, but it's MUCH bigger and MUCH more expensive. Same concept, though - an enormous amount of performance options that are presented in small venues around the downtown area.
  10. Teague definitely had a flair for deco product design! I've seen that large mirrored disk radio in a gallery or museum before. Very striking in person, too. And Noguchi's "Radio Nurse" has been appraised on Antiques Roadshow
  11. I have to get to this Fest one of these days!
  12. Very nice examples of those cameras, Jim. Especially the box with that Gift Kodak! The 3 Beau Brownies are very cool, too. I actually have a Bantam Special (the pin striped black deco item) in very nice condition similar to yours. I've seen it on display at MoMA in NYC, too. They're definitely collectors items, as are all those you pictured which are in great condition. Thanks for sharing!
  13. One last guitar comment. Fender has an interesting 'design your own' guitar program in their Mod Shop. Price varies according to parts of course, but you can put together a really nice instrument for about $1,700. I keep thinking about this, but just can't justify the cost as an amateur part-time musician.
  14. Utter nonsense or not (stat-wise), people in baseball are paying a lot of attention to it. THAT makes it important.
  15. Oh, that IS frustrating, Lon! A storage locker is a dangerous thing to have. That camera collection ate up quite a bit of $$ in storage fees over the years. Consider it a long-term project. Funny you should mention the Tele ......... I've been thinking of switching it out for a Strat lately. I don't play it much now. Fender has a new line of MIM guitars including a "Deluxe Stratocaster HSS" that has the features I'm looking for: whammy bar, bridge humbucker with an S-1 switch to split the coils, noiseless single coil PUs and a reasonable price that won't break the bank.
  16. They tell you what's in the box here. BTW, I was wrong about the Amazon price, it's actually a few dollars more than Hamilton, but still very cheap. https://www.amazon.com/Casablanca-Ultimate-Collectors-Humphrey-Bogart/dp/B001EL6EHC
  17. I envy you guys with room to collect guitars. I live in a condo and I barely have enough room for 3 in the corner of my guest bedroom. So, I don't consider myself a collector of guitars - just enough to provide different playing experiences. I have a MIM Telecaster, a Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster and a Parker PM-20 Pro (sort of a Les Paul style). I also have my old childhood Tele from the 60s, which would probably be worth something except that the body had been re-shaped when I bought it. It also needs significant other work.
  18. That Casablanca box looks interesting! It's about the same price on Amazon - seems like a great deal with all the extras. The Blu-ray box is much more, but I doubt the quality will be that much different.
  19. This is one that I come back to pretty frequently. Interesting collection and the way Orrin Keepnews arranged the tunes/artists is unusual, as well.
  20. Not sure if this qualifies as a "box", but: 3 Days of the Condor/ All the Presidents Men [Blu-ray] - $8.20, Amazon
  21. Don't remember seeing this topic before. I have my father's camera collection, which I have been selling off for a couple of years, so not in the "acquiring" mode right now. But I've decided to keep quite a few of the most interesting and valuable pieces for myself. In the process of researching and selling on ebay, I've learned quite a bit about vintage and antique photographic equipment and really appreciate the progression of technology over the past 150 years or so. I have pieces that span that entire timeline. Needless to say some of my favorite pieces are Leica and Zeiss models, but there are MANY others that are amazing, too.
  22. Wow - that seems very arcane. I've bought several signed albums online from artists' crowd-sourcing campaigns. Don't know where most of them came from, but I doubt they were all from California. I guess they were breaking the law, though! I'm gonna go with Sangry's thought: "... maybe Manfred Eicher hates surf music and is making a point." Thanks for the offer, Agggggggggggggggggggggg! He's gonna be at SFJAZZ next month, so maybe I'll just wait for that.
  23. I wonder why they won't ship to California?
  24. Kamasi Washington at SFJAZZ tomorrow night. Saw him last year in a club situation. Nice to see all the excitement generated by this artist, especially the younger generations.
  25. Thanks!
