  1. Good pick up. It's one of my favorite Mosaics. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I believe I will. I've had my eye on that set for a long time, and had previously ruled out getting the CDs issued by Candid themselves. Looking at Cuscuna's feedback profile, there has been a lot of activity from him on ebay lately. Worth keeping an eye on bluenotesounds. Some of the sets auctioned today were also on sale earlier this month. Is it "bluenotesound" or "bluenotesounds"? I searched for both and came up empty.
  2. BN.com has Criterion sets for 50% off through 7/28. This includes the new "A Hard Days Night" set!
  3. Some nice comments by Carla Bley and Ratzo Harris here: CHARLIE HADEN (1937-2014)—ONE OF THE GREATEST
  4. He's playing at Candlestick Park here in SF on Aug 14. Significant because it was where the Beatles last performed live in public, and will be the last concert at the park before they tear it down. Not going, though. It sold out VERY fast and is VERY expensive.
  5. this exists as excellent sounding japanese Vinyl release.....better than nothing ..... I have the Horo vinyl, but don't have a way to play it anymore.
  6. Saw Ben Allison last week at Birdland. It was an enjoyable show, but unfortunately not as adventurous as I had hoped. He had a great drummer who's making a splash in NYC and headlining his own shows at the VV this week - Rudy Royston. Keep an eye out for this guy!
  7. Unfortunately, I don't buy vinyl anymore. Hopefully CDs will come along eventually. . As usual, I would love to get a digital version of this: Max Roach - The Loadstar
  8. The Criterion box also contains the films (and complete performances), "Jimi Plays Monterey" and "Shake! Otis at Monterey" which are worth the price of the DVD set alone. Agree with Felser that Monterey might be a more significant cultural landmark than Woodstock. AFAIK it was the first ever feature length rock concert film.
  9. Just got back from NYC where I saw the "Degenerate Art" exhibit at the Neue Gallery on 5th Ave. Very interesting and informative about the Nazi's campaign to demonize all art that didn't conform to their 'standards'.
  10. If it's the Criterion DVD box, that's definitely worth getting for all of the extra footage not in the original film. The CD box is great, too. I guess it depends on if you want to watch it or listen. Get BOTH!
  11. I use it a lot, but it's imperfect to say the LEAST.
  12. That's a shame. RIP, Pete! I haven't been there for MANY years, but have fond memories of the shows I saw. It always makes me feel good that it's still down there on the coast. I hope someone keeps it going.
  13. I've never been that familiar with Akiyoshi/Tabakin, so I checked out the clips on the Select today. GREAT stuff! I think I'm going to have to get it. Probably the Tony Williams, too, although I have a couple of the CDs and the others on vinyl.
  14. The new season has been announced and tix went on sale to members today. As usual, a pretty wide-ranging schedule. Check it out here: SFJAZZ 2014-15 Season Today I grabbed seats for the SFJAZZ Collective [the Music of Joe Henderson], The Cookers, Brian Blade Fellowship, and Ravi Coltrane (w/Special Guests) [John Coltrane's A Love Supreme 50th Anniversary Celebration]. I'm sure I'll pick up other shows as the season rolls along.
  15. They're trying to raise money through IndieGoGo (like Kickstarter) If you're interested, you can contribute here: Join MILES AHEAD - A Don Cheadle Film
  16. I thought her guitar playing was the best part of the show actually! Harrell is a very interesting guy. For someone with his obvious disability, he's incredibly prolific and always surrounds himself with top-shelf talent.
  17. I had trouble with her previous album, which is why I never got the newer one. I thought seeing her would help, because she always seems to get interesting reviews. In a nutshell, I thought the show was overly loud (not that I have a problem with loud music), many of the songs sounded the same, and I didn't understand how the 'robotic' stage show related to the songs.
  18. Saw St Vincent in March. Gotta say I didn't "get it". But thinking that I need to get her latest album, anyway, and try to figure out what it was that I didn't "get". Off to NYC in a week and a half. Planning to see Harold Mabern at Small's and Ben Allison at Birdland. Looking forward to it!
  19. Great - thanks for the heads up!
  20. Lee Morgan Complete 50's - Disks 1, 2 (w/Horace Silver)
  21. I'll be in NYC in a couple of weeks and am planning to see Harold Mabern. I can't figure out what their ticket policy is, though - anyone have information on that?
