http://www.zdnet.com...ver-7000003846/ I'm debating whether to buy that or not, have no need for the Fire, as I do not play computer games, do not subscribe to newspapers, etc. Might wait for more reviews to come in, though I really like the idea of being able to read a Kindle in the dark, it is a P.I.A. when you fly at night and they turn off the cabin lights, whenever I turn on the overhead light the person next to me always complains.

Ha! They're nothing compared to Yuni Beatencourt.

There's ansolutely no reason you should be posting about Mr. Nessa with such contempt. He really has achieved a lot in jazz.

The big rumor going around is that this concert is finally going to be released. It HAS to be true! the Led Zeppelin Facebook page is counting down each day right now, with two more days to go. If it's on the internet, it has to be true, right? Maybe Jimmy "Mr-take-all-the-freakin'-time-to-remaster-anything-to-your-insane-standards-until-no-one-gives-a-darn-anymore-that-it's-coming-out" Page is finally happy with the DVD quality.

Well, it's not a good development for publishers who are reprinting out of copyright works in bound editions. But otherwise, what's the problem? I very much support the Library of America editions (though I know there is a whole variety of issues around the idea of "canonical writers" it fosters), and I would be sorry to see them go dark. Plus, and granted, this is a irrational feeling on my part, but it seems to diminish James' accomplishment on a purely emotional level. I old enough (man yelling at empty chair age) where I like the heft of a physical book, and it adds to the sense that "I'm holding something important." I don't get the feel off of electronic gizmos, I even feel that way about music, despite the fact I can hear most of the music I'm interested in for free, I still buy the cds; it's like I do not take the item seriously if I am not holding something physical. Sorry, old geezer talk.

I wonder what the long run effect of Kindle will be, I just brought the complete works of Henry James for $2.99. These very books I was buying at a steady rate from the Library of America, and now, I have everything for just $2.99, after I'd spent about $200, with more to go. It can't be a good development.

Yikes! Player gets revived on the field, has broken neck, fractured spine, collapsed lung.

Neither did mine when I looked on my iPhone, in fact, it was telling me to make the picks. When I went to my desktop, they were there. Strange app programing on this one...

When I looked at the " View All Picks" this morning, you were down for the 'boys...

Milestones (Jack Chambers)
Matthew replied to fasstrack's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I respectfully disagree with "He was an all-time great artist for whom vanity and the desire to stay in the spotlight---and perhaps not grow old gracefully---seemed to get the better of," I think that how he conducted his later career was the only way that Davis could create some space between himself and the public, a way to maintain this part of him that was just for him, outside anyone's control. He was very aware of fame, and the trappings thereof, but his later music is very powerful (a good example is his Montreux appearances, they are very good to my ears), but he needed this outer facade, not just for privacy, but to mess with people. He was one of those guys who needed to put on a front to protect this "inner Miles" that he cared very much about. Granted, Davis was a very messed-up person at times, and we all know the horror stories of his treatment of women, but there are other crosscurrents that are powerful, that get hidden by the Mr. Cool aspect. I often feel a very good book could be written about how Columbia presented Miles & Brubeck to the public, because our outlooks on both these artists are heavily influenced by Columbia's marketing of these two figures, it would say a lot on how their backgrounds were presented. -
I got the update this morning, so it's all good.

Rock/pop albums that are surprisingly unavailable
Matthew replied to Pete C's topic in Miscellaneous Music
"Hymns to the Silence" is freakin' hard to come by also. Of course, when I moved, that was one of the CDs I sold to help pay for the move. Matthew, you idiot! Let me also add: Moby Grape's debut album, and a ton of Sky Saxon albums. Let me add again: Try finding Bram Tchaikovsky's two albums on cd... impossible! And I really dug both his albums back in the day. -
What is the least likely song you've heard on Muzac?
Matthew replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Miscellaneous Music
My favorite line from the movie "Airheads". "Who would win in a fight, Lemmy or God? Trick question, Lemmy IS God!" That is a hilarious quote... -

((((((((WOW))))))))) By O V Wright? MG Yeah, this. Details, please. If Muzak was really hip it would be the Motorhead song.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUlMLLiwlz4 Shows you where my head is at, the Motorhead song is the only one I ever thought of. Imagine, Lemmy tamed by Muzak! -
Are you planning on reading the trilogy in one go? I haven't tackled this, and indeed, currently it is packed up (only a small portion of Waugh is on the shelves at present). I guess I am afraid of a let-down. Several people/reviewers told me that Ford Maddox Ford's Parade's End was his finest achievement, far outshining The Good Soldier, but I found it turgid and flat and barely made it through. There could be many reasons for my reaction, though in general I don't like reading war stories, or at least traditional ones. I was moved by Nemirovsky's Suite Francais. You have to read the trilogy, it's my favorite Waugh, especially Men At Arms, where everything comes under Waugh's cynical eye. No wonder the military gave him leave to write a book, I can only imagine what he must have been like as an officer. Indeed, in Waugh's world, God cares very much about the English Catholic Aristocracy!

According to a previous discussion, the tapes for Chicago were at the wrong speed, has that been corrected? -
I made my picks yesterday, my strange pick of the first week, Dallas beats the Giants. One question: I downloaded the CBS Fantasy app, and I can get to the league page, but it seems as if I cannot make my picks off my iPhone. Am I missing something?

Well, I seem to remember a snowy day in Dallas, and an OT named Leon Lett... -
Have my pre-order in on BOC already, the other box I'm thinking about getting is the Brecker Brothers, though I'm not enamored with the way the albums were produced, if I remember how they sounded when they came out. I will also breakdown one day and get the Woody Shaw. Matthew - Where did you preorder the BOC? On Amazon UK, it can be had for 48.01 Pounds shipped to the U.S., which equates to $75.80. Do you know of a better price? I'm debating whether to preorder it at this price, or just wait and see if it becomes a special offer at some point on either Amazon or Pop Market... I got mine through Amazon Canada ($100), but I like your cheaper price!
