This is one of the few Mosaic LP sets I haven't managed to put my hands on yet. The other ones are the Lee Morgan, the Master Jazz piano, the first two Commodore sets and the Basie Studio Roulette....
How good is this set, Bob?
Moving on.... I find buying original recordings not as costly as I feared it could be but when it comes to BN, I simply can't see myself spend $200 or more for an original pressing. Is the sound difference bewteeen a King reissue and an original BN worth spending that much money?
What about the difference between King reissues and Blue Note NY? The good thing with King reissues is that the art work is often in excellent condition.
I am always suspicious when I see Mosaic sets auctioned by groups of 5,10 or more sets put together. Anybody with a bit of common sense knows that he would make much more money by selling them individually. This type of auctions stinks. It is an easy way to make a lot of money on somebody's back by receiving only one negative feedback for a massive steal.....
Thanks Daniele. I keep saying I need to buy this thing but everytime I have some money to spend I can't help buying some more music instead of investing in this book....
Oops... The Miles Smiles I have is the 2 eye stereo version ( CS 9401). 'Columbia' and '360 sound' written in white and 'Miles Smiles Miles Davis Quintet' written in black. 1st or 2nd pressing?
Are they both original pressings? In other words can you find albums in the 2eye and the 6eye version? I recently bought a Miles Smiles 6eyes (sorry about the alliteration.... ) that sounds great! A bit silly of me to buy this as I have the Mosaic set but the price was too tempting and I like the cover art!
Here we go. I have been buying LPs for quite some time now but I still feel like a beginner compared to the few experts we have around here. I thought we could have a thread for one-off questions related to the world of vinyl......
I will start with that one: Can somebody explain the difference between 2 eye and 6 eye records for the Columbia label?
Yes, I have just noticed that. I am not sure it is going to revolutionise the way I use the Mosaic website. I can't see much point in this..... In my case it would be easier to have a 'list of the sets I don't intend buy' than a 'wish list' as the latter is far far too long!
Some additional info: the orange/black label exists in shiny and matt versions. Shiny labels appear to be earlier - at least for the first 99 (?) titles. Best sounding originals IMO are white label promo's.Peter
I have to agree with this but it looks like not everybody agrees with us. I'd expect them to sell for more $$ on Ebay than they do. I have bought a few Coltrane WLPs lately for much less than I would have thought....
