  3. Patty Duke died today. RIP. I think her hit "Please Don't Just Stand There" qualifies her for a place in the Artists forum. I remember when she followed Ed Asner as head of the actors' union.

  7. Exactly how did jazz acquire this curious cultural cachet? I commend your attention to “Playboy Swings!: How Hugh Hefner and Playboy Changed the Face of Music,” a well-researched, fascinatingly detailed new book by Patty Farmer that comes out next month. Written with the assistance of Will Friedwald, a frequent contributor to the Journal, “Playboy Swings!” goes a long way toward answering that question. Full review here: WSJ (Full article title: The Man Who Made Jazz Sexy. You may need to Google the title to read the article.)

  9. Moanin' Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Patty Smith Group - Easter Bud Powell - (Bouncing with Bud) (XTRA)
  10. Interesting - I recall reading that the film had something to do with the Living Theatre, but wasn't sure if it actually was completed and released. On the OC with lyrics front, I've heard the Merrill version (beautiful) and Patty Waters also did "Lonely Woman," albeit with lyrics she wrote herself (also beautiful). The latter is on Marzette Watts' Savoy LP. Also have very few problems with Yoko Ono. She's an interesting artist and seems like a cool lady, from someone I know who works with her.
  11. Four new, free, lo-fi downloadable cell phone recordings from a Plano living room have been added here https://soundcloud.com/summusic-3 Hey Joe (Where Ya' Goin' With That Book In Your Hand) - An improvisation inspired by some of the characters in Joe Milazzo's recent novel Crepuscule With Nellie. Inspired writing proved to inspire some playing! Joe's book is not in any way an easy read, but damn, it's a good one. Goin' Inta' TOWN In Tha' Morenin' - Originally made famous by Pee Pie Patty and The Pot Pie Plenty on their hit album "Five'll Get Ya' Ten (and Ten'll Get Ya' Twenty)..at least that's what I wrote on the lead sheet. The song was written with - and still has - lyrics, and also has a still-evolving mythology revolving around a supernaturally-inclined deep-(farthest)backwoods people who only take their children into town once in their lifetime, so it's a big deal for everybody. MAOHOUND!!! - Another compositional improvisation on the "CHOWHOUND" theme. Sometimes we play the tune "as is", sometimes we use it as a reference point for group improv. The latter is the case here. I really like improvising on a theme rather than a "song", there's so many ways to look at it that way, intervals, rhythmic motifs, harmonic pivots, all that "technical" stuff that nobody cares about. Dance Hippiechick, DANCE!!! - This one goes waaaay back to Quartet Out, but it was never commercially recorded, and besides, you know how long-lived bands can get, certain tunes become "functional" in terms of purpose, set placement, etc. Back then, it was written and performed as kind of a tongue-in-cheek (in terms of title, anyway) "Jimmy Giuffre Meets Charles Lloyd On Chico Hamilton's Bandstand" kind of "relief from the intensity" thing, and more or less stayed there, although with QO, things always ended up getting frisky in spite of intent. But I wanted to revisit the essential concept with this trio, and see if we couldn't open it up/out a little more, and I think we're doing that. I've given the responsibility for setting the mood and time to Carl with an opening solo that he can do with as he pleases. This time, he stuck his bow in his strings and started making kinda like Ysabel's Belly Dance or something, which was a complete surprise, but also allowed for a really good zone to subsequently develop. Him & Andrew are both a perpetual joy to play with, open minds, infinite patience, and an enthusiasm for playing music as music and not as a gig. That is too freakin' scarce around these parts, believe me. As a side note, for the 3.01 date, we were between snowstorms, and on the 3.31 date, I had the AC on. Life in the Texas weather, gotta love it. Or at least deal with it. Thanks in advance to anybody who takes the time to listen/download/conversate, etc. The recordings are lo-fi indeed, but I think the music is worth at least twice what I'm asking you to pay for it.

  13. Also to be fair I don't think Plant has got the chops to sing early Led Zep anymore. In the Band of joy tour, the few LZ covers he performed were backed up by Patty Griffin . As it was mentionned Plant has done as well creatively outside the band and doesn't need to do museum rock and should stick to his guns.

  16. "Has there ever been a more white, middle-class show than Friends?" Well, not if you don't count Leave It To Beaver, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Our Miss Brooks, The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Patty Duke Show, Family Affair, The Brady Bunch, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Happy Days, etc.
  17. I too have picked up that very album (literally), thought about it, and put it back. The Patty Bown, I haven't noticed.
  18. Saw this yesterday at a very cheap price and had it in the pile, but then come culling time, thought about it, looked it over, though about it some more, and decided hmmmmm....buying more items just becuase they are curiosities is not what I need to be about doing right now, neither financially or reality-based storage needs, so back on the shelf you go (along with the Patty Bown Epic side, which was one tough call, actually, but these are tough times for the literal-minded immediatists, hello truth in motion, Ed Shaugnessy being the swing factor, and yes, I know about all that, not making snap-decision based on sideburn/medallion sterotypes, know what all else there is to that, like I said, a tough call, tough). So, getting home, it appears that YouTube is full of clips from the groups next(?) album, and I'm like, WHEW dodged that bullet, chief, HELL yeah! But then I ruminated that that second album was NOT presented by Stan Kenton, so maybe it's less purely Solid JazzFuture than the one I left behind, and now I don't know. Tomorrow's a holiday and my car still has gas. I can go places if I want to, especially if I need to. So, citizens of the World, what sayst youse? Is Stan Kenton Presents The Al Belletto Sextet an sleeper giant of an album, or should I leave well enough alone and just inside the air-conditioning of the crib, watch an Emergency rerun or three, and hope that some worthy party (hello, Ken, yes, you) finds the Patty Bown Epic side still there? Your voice counts!
  19. Just back from New York City the other day, after spending several days on an improv binge, starting with Anthony Braxton Falling River Nonet at Roulette, with Fay Victor Ensemble's presentation of "Neighborhood Dynamics." Having made 3 late night runs up to Philly and back to DC in the last month, it might be understandable that I was suffering road fatigue. I had to shove myself out the door Saturday morning and start the usual 4 1/2 hour trip north. Except in this case, the trip took 6 1/2 hours due to traffic. Nevertheless, arrived in plenty of time for a bite to eat and drink before the concert. Note: If you are driving to NY, leave yourself plenty of room; traffic can be dreadful. I know the pot-holed streets are. The first half of the program was Fay Victor Ensemble. "Neighborhood Dynamics" is an extended piece for singer (Fay) and musicians (Nicole Mitchell, flute, Vincent Chancey, French horn, Anders Nilsson, guitar, Ken Filiano, double bass), on the dynamics of "gentrification" in formerly minority neighborhoods. I have to admit it didn't sound promising (maybe too didactic possibly), but it turned out to be a sparkling bit of social commentary sung and played with spirit. The delivery was witty and satirical, funny but astute. I recall one series of lyrics (don't take my memory of it as the actual thing please) that ran along the lines of, "Here come the restaurants.....now even the dogs are cleaner....gee, it looks like Europe now.....get out! we don't like you!" (to the previous residents). The musicians were all fine. Filiano seemed to act as musical director of the group, pushing, prodding, drawing inflections and expressions from the different members. But I was most attracted by Nicole Mitchell's flute playing. I'd probably drive the same distance again to hear her play flute like that. I think the audience was a bit stunned when Mitchell and Victor jumped into a game of "patty-cake" and really went at it! Obviously, the group was in high spirits. I could see this morphing into a musical. Braxton's Falling River Music Nonet was the drawing card. I got lucky, sitting in the first row, right below where Braxton took his position in the group. Here was the line-up: Anthony Braxton, saxophones James Fei, saxophones Ingrid Laubrock, saxophones Jasmine Lovell-Smith, saxophones Mary Halvorson, guitar Brandon Seabrook, guitar Tomeka Reid, cello Nate Wooley, trumpet Taylor Ho Bynum, cornet In essence, a group of young virtuosi. Amazing to see them perform. The group was arranged in a horseshoe form, with matching instruments on each side of the horseshoe, and guitars and cello anchoring the horseshoe in the middle. The music was wonderful. Dynamic, complex, full of variety. I don't have the program booklet at hand, don't know if there is a composition number for the piece. I'll try to find it. Best thing though was watching Braxton, who was totally into it, playing and giving occasional directions to the group. Soon after he started, the famous cardigan came off. Braxton really attacked his instruments, a sopranino, soprano, and alto. Braxton got into some spirited back-and-forths with other members of the ensemble, one in particular with Ingrid Laubrock, whom I noticed smiling and laughing a bit after one particular exchange. I had a chance to ask her a couple of days later about it, and she said it was just because the communication and spirit of the playing was so good. That's the way I felt about it too. A bit of a bonus. They were selling prints of some of Braxton's musical notation scores (the kind that look like expressionist paintings). I bought one and Mr. Braxton was kind enough to sign it for me. A very gracious man. He mentioned he is done with Wesleyan, and is moving closer to the New Haven line (to NYC), so I expect we will see more of Mr. Braxton on the Downtown scene, which will be terrific. Imagine Braxton performing new quartet pieces, sole performances, etc. I will happily log more hours on the NJ Turnpike for that!
