Very well recorded, indeed the best recording of a Left Bank concert that I've heard. Sprited performances. Very enjoyable release. Quote

T.D. Posted September 11, 2025 Report Posted September 11, 2025 There's a new Sun Ra documentary film: https://www.firelightfilms.tv/films/sun-ra-do-the-impossible Mostly shown at festivals so far. Coming to the area soon, I may go see it. Quote
Kyo Posted October 25, 2025 Report Posted October 25, 2025 Got the expanded reissue of Supersonic Jazz this week, comes with a second CD of bonus tracks! https://sunramusic.bandcamp.com/album/supersonic-jazz-expanded-edition With this and the earlier expanded reissue of Jazz in Silhouette (with Sound Sun Pleasure included), the '50s are now covered quite nicely. Can't wait for them to get to the early '60s material, that part of the discography has been such a mess! Quote
Holy Ghost Posted Wednesday at 02:42 AM Report Posted Wednesday at 02:42 AM There is going to be a documentary airing on PBS this Friday at 9pm titled Sun Ra: Do the Impossible, which is part of the American Music Masters series, which is the same series that aired the Max Roach documentary. Quote
Dub Modal Posted 21 hours ago Report Posted 21 hours ago Who else is watching this documentary tonight? Quote
jazzbo Posted 21 hours ago Report Posted 21 hours ago I'll be recording it. . . will watch it when I can in the near future. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted 20 hours ago Author Report Posted 20 hours ago Unfortunately we just unplugged and turned in our cable box yesterday — before our move to Pittsburgh in two days (this Monday). Will have to watch it on Passport in the next few weeks when I can (we’re PBS subscriber/supporters, NPR too). Quote
Dub Modal Posted 20 hours ago Report Posted 20 hours ago An hour in and I think they've done a really good job on this; connecting his roots, music and philosophy in a cohesive presentation. Quote

Stompin at the Savoy Posted 10 hours ago Report Posted 10 hours ago Just finished it. Very enjoyable. Thoreau once said "in wildness is the preservation of the world" or something like that. With Sun Ra: in weirdness is the preservation of the cosmos. In a world that is pressing for sameness and homogeneity, this strangeness is salvation. Quote
Dub Modal Posted 10 hours ago Report Posted 10 hours ago I really enjoyed it. The interviews and footage were top notch. Made me want to deep dive Sun Ra afterwards. Don't know if anyone else caught the King Records doc right after but the first 15 mins of that were great. Hopefully the PBS app allows streaming of these. Quote

Holy Ghost Posted 2 hours ago Report Posted 2 hours ago This doc is really, really good. I recorded this almost a week out and missed the King records doc afterwards. Quote
Dub Modal Posted 1 hour ago Report Posted 1 hour ago Confirmed that the PBS app allows streaming of this documentary, along with the Max Roach American Masters doc. Watching the Roach now, and will probably rewatch the Sun Ra one later. Quote
